Need advice to buy new camera in comming comex

Yea true, buying camera as long as u happy with your camera and the price, then good enough
yup i agree, dont' let anyone tell you otherwise..

Hi khhome06. Try to picture yourself carrying a DSLR in all the places you will be visiting when you travel. If you find that there is no problem carrying one with you, then the DSLR may be suitable. If there are some places where you think you will be leaving the camera in the hotel room because of the bulk and weight, then consider again. A good compact camera may be the way to go. The S90 (or something similar) is real handy and if you are not going to print anything larger than 4R, it will give you comparable quality.
If you want to go delve deeper into photography, then a DSLR is a must. The DSLR have more flexibility in lens choices, works better in dimly lit conditions and you can add powerful flash - in short it is a system.
Get a camera soon and learn it so that you can enjoy your holidays instead of fretting over how to operate one.
Read through the forums - beside exhibitions, where prices are so-so and service is lousy, there are also some shops to avoid if you are a novice shopper. Stick to the reputable shops mentioned and don't be fooled by special prices offered by some of these shops.

Hi Kermitfm, thanks for your detail advice. I'm currently half-way into "photography for dummies" and at the same time, reading alot of review and forum and visit shops.
One thing i notice i for entry-level dslr, like sony a290(lucky i havn't rush out to buy, i play with one at sony bugis store yesterday) is the lcd doesn't display "picture" like my sony DSC-TX1. I'm used to pns, so it like a "shock" to me.
did you ask the salesperson abt it? cause seems to me it might be solved by changing some of the settings in the a290
One effect i like(hope) to achieve for my trip is to take photo like this (below) cause alot of time i took a photo of someone(maybe myself) beside an object, i cant pinpoint the focus as the background is very disturbing.

The displaying of "picture" like pns is call liveview and are not available on entry level DSLR like Nikon D3000 and Sony A230/A290. Other slightly above models like Nikon D5000, Canon 1000D and Sony A330/A390 have that function. So you might consider the Sony A390 instead of A290 if you really need that function.
These pictures are call bokeh and are achievable on DSLR by using large aperture(f number) and if on kit lens(try to zoom in), the idea is to create a shallow depth of field where the subject infront (you or someone) will be sharp and the blackground which is far away will be blur.
If you are already thinking "should I get a dslr' and reading a photography book it means you kenna poison already. You will never be satisfied with a PnS because you will be wondering whether would you get better pictures with a dslr. Everytime you see someone carrying a dslr, you will be wondering should you get one.
So don't think so much and just go buy one. Entry level is fine. Don't need to blow so much money until you have actually used a dSLR for some time (especially for holiday). Then you can decide whether value convenience or picture quality more. If you finally decide that DSLR is not worth the hassle, sell it off 2nd hand here in this forum and go back to PnS.
I once one like you...thinking I will just use the dslr and kit lens for holiday pics...but once kenna poison...there is no cure ....the itch to upgrade body and buy lenses will come .... but I don't regret and I won't forsee myself going back to PnS...even with just kit lens, a dslr is better than any PnS.
I also bought the A300 over the A200 because of the liveview. Now on hindsight, I think there is no real need to get liveview. 95% of the time you will be using the optical viewfinder. So I think the A290 is fine. The sony 18-55 kit lens is also quite good. Just buy it and don't look back. Just don't buy at comex..;p
