Hi, i am interested in getting dslr camera, but i still could not decide which dslr would be best suited for me..currently i am stuck between canon 100d or 70d or nikon 5300d..i wanted to get 100d due to its light weight but i read not very good reviews about 100d..i read quite a number of reviews on these 3 cameras, the more i read, its more difficult to decide on which one to get
I was planning to use for my holidays and maybe some occasionally outings..pls advise if which camera is better?

If you are only choosing from the three cameras, I would say that all three are good. However, if you ask me, for travel camera, I normally goes for a smaller and lighter cameras (that is me only though and I know of people who went overseas with large, heavy stuffs just to get the photos and images they want) because I am only aiming for candid shots.

For most of your application, I think a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera would be good. Look to Sony's offering - A6000, A5000, etc. They are small (relatively speaking), with great IQ, excellent AF speed and accuracy and have good enough amount of lenses available (although some of the lenses are not small and light). Another option was to go to the m4/3 cameras like the offering from Panasonic and Olympus.

I owned an Olympus OMD EM5 and I would say that the IQ is comparable (and in some cases surpass) my older Canon EOS 7D... and it was relatively small, with great AF speed and accuracy and excellent lenses (now you can get an EM5 at pretty reasonable price).

Do note that 100D although good, and small... its lens isn't... that is why I would recommend a m4/3 camera.

Between these 3, 70D and D5300 are both great. But you might want to consider the Nikon D7100 instead.

U mean the default kit lens 18-55 is not good for canon 100d?

Canon's kit lens is surprisingly good actually. There is no problem with that lens. The thing about 100D is that it is small (body wise), with the kit lens, you would not really feel too uncomfortable. However, in future if you wanted to upgrade your lens... anything too large, and you would start to feel uncomfortable holding the body.

I can only say that the 70d is a match or slightly better then my 7d for phototaking n the video wins my 7d hands down. So you need to ask yourself whether video is important in your requirements.

Sensor of each cam is from different generation.

Overall handling 7D is a much better camera.

I would like to have a dslr wif good video quality too, another reason i would chose 70d becos it is weather sealed, i have seen my friend risking his d5100 in the rain..luckily the camera was not affected..
Is the video quality of d5300 or 100d lower compared to 70d?
Price is also a factor for me, for the price cheaper than 70d i could get d5300 wif 18-140mm lens but i would like to ask izit recommended? Or jus the regular 18-55 enuff?

Er... since your friend had risk his D5100 in the rain and was not affected, wouldn't it also mean that weather sealing is not really needed in your circumstances unless you want to bring it somewhere that is pouring rain and I mean really heavy rain. Light drizzling to moderate raining wouldn't be a problem. I used to own a 1000D (which doesn't has any weather sealing too) brought it to bird park to shoot and was caught in a rain. My camera survived, I don't (fell ill later on).

As to video quality... D5300 and 100D as compared to 70D is pretty much the same, I would say. I really don't see a problem in it. The main difference is the handling. D5300 and 100D are entry level DSLR whereby it was supposedly made to allow user to use it easily and without too much forms in it to overwhelm the user. 70D is aimed at intermediate level (mid-pro) user, with an extra dial for quick action. 70D is bigger as compared to both D5300 and 100D, and to me, the grip is more comfortable, because it is deeper.

As to which kit lens to go for... nobody can really tell you, because we do not know the kind of range you would like. But I would think that the 18-140mm is good. It give you a larger range (although IQ might be slightly affected) as compared to 18-55mm (but not too much or significant).

If I was to choose, I would definitely go for the 70D or D7100 for the ergonomic. I would not go for 100D (it is too small - the body, and the lenses are still of the same size. For that type of size, I would easily go for m4/3 cameras), and D5300 because I don't find the grip comfortable enough. And yes, both 70D and D7100 take excellent video too.

Thanks rhino123, daredevil123, crabballfor ur advice =),..so u mean that the larger the zoom range the IQ will be affected?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: Depends.

In short the larger the zoom, the more optic elements are in the lens and that will cause the following issues

1) Light lost (will affect speed of the lens, sharpness, etc)
2) Distortion

However this might not be the case (or at least not as pronounce) if the lens are designed properly. But that would also mean that the lens would be larger and more expensive.

You need to weigh in the disadvantage and advantages of a lens with large zoom. For alot of people, the lost in IQ was not really that important when compared to the flexibility of the lens and it really don't show if you are not printing 100% crop and only go for small print.

Canon had a 18-200mm lens available as kit too, and there is a CS brother here who uses this lens to its fullest capability and I tell you, the result is excellent.

You could also looked into the following combination,

Canon 100D or Nikon D5300 with 18-55mm kit lens + 55-250mm STM lens (for Canon) or 55-200mm (For Nikon)

This shouldn't set you back too much. But you do have to change lens quite frequently depending on what you intent to shoot.

Another way is to get the body only and get a Sigma 17-70mm lens. I have one - the older version (I am thinking the newer one should be better), and this lens is on my 7D most of the time. It is not excellent but it serve its purpose.

If video is important, one other factor to consider is the on-sensor DPAF on the 70D which makes autofocus while shooting videos much better than the other listed cameras. Coupled with the new STM kit lenses for almost silent focusing in videos, I'd say that the 70D is the clear winner if video is important. Doesn't make much difference when shooting stills though, other than perhaps better Live View autofocus when shooting awkward angles (e.g. macro shooting).
