Thanks for all your advise. I have finally decide and got myself a :)50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor

If Nikon comes out with a 24/1.4 ... No need to think so much. Pick the prime over the zoom.

Nikon has a 28/1.4 and now I can buy two 70-200 with its price. Wonder how much will the 24/1.4 costs... If Nikon ever comes out with one, will definitely get it. Then my prime trinity will be 24/1.4, 50/1.4 and 85/1.4, woot!

But if the 24/1.4 ever comes out, it will updated to AFS. It may be better than getting the AFD 28/1.4 and those hoarding the lens will take a hit. On DX, 24mm will be a good walk-about lens with a decent FOV. Wish Nikon will update the 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 as well.

why a prime for a walkabout? kit lens is a much better option - for easy composition etc. the 18-200mm is a bit heavy on the d80, 18-55 or 18-70 is much better.

18-200 heavy on D80? You've gotta be kidding me... For a girl, perhaps; for a guy, then it is not the lens that is heavy but the guy needs more training.

18-200 not tat heavy, body + lens less than 2kg onli;p

I never thought I say this. two lens I do use

Nikon 18-200 VR & Sigma 18-55 F2.8

I use the sigma more now because of the sensitivity.

The 18-70 D70 kit lens is very good too

apologies, when i mean heavy i mean in terms of the balance in relation with the camera body. the 18-200 feels great on the d200 for example.

I do agree with bubby that the 18-200 with a D80 is heavy. Cos i personally finds it quite difficult to stable to cam when using this lens. maybe its my method of holding the cam is the cause of it, I duno?

Anyway the 50mm f1.4 lens is great with the D80 for me.:)

I always find 50mm prime too light on my d50 leh... can feel the whole camera vibrate when mirror slap.

1.4 or 1.8?

ive got the 50 1.8 on my d70s and use it a lot, guess its the low-light conditions i frequently shoot in
i personally dont find that it feels odd on the d70s

used a canon 70-200 f/2.8 on a 400d, and that did really feel weird; oh, and the 50 1.4 on the d3 looks weird too

to ts: i find ur decision a little odd, y a 50 1.4 (no doubt its a great lens) when u were looking for a walkabout lens?
tamron/sigma 18-200, nice price and qual is pretty decent
of course, if u have enough $ get the nikon 1
but otherwise the tamron is v v reasonable for 11+ times zoom

I already have a Nikon 18-200 Vr lens but is being use by my other half. So i decided to get a prime len instead.

Why a Prime Lens?

It trains your composition. When you work with a prime, it trains you to be more creative, because you just can't zoom in or out (except with your legs).

Yes, prime lens is good for training composition but when you are in a situation where there is simply no place to move, it is time to bring out your zoom lens.

I am now experimenting with a 50mm and it is a challenge to form interesting composition.

It is good to challenge yourself this way. I have done so and I feel that I have emerged more creative. All the best in your effort, bro.

You may want to check out a small series of 50mm shots I did. These were back about a month ago, before I got my 35 f/2, so the 50mm was a PR on my camera.

The small collection can be found here. [Clicky]

I'm using the AF-S 17-55 / 2.8 for most of my walkabout shooting with my D200. This lens, in my opinion, is really tough, sharp and with max aperture of 2.8, allows you to shoot even in dim light conditions [I do quite a lot of night shots with this lens. Can buy new or look for a good used one.

Yes, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens and its cheap too. :) You'll have all the light you need having a big aperture and the focal length is also just nice for candid shots. If you need a wider shot, just back up a few steps. Having a light weight lens is better than lugging a heavy cannon on your neck all the times.
