Need advice -Making a choice for camera body

Hi all,

I just rented a Canon 7D and a canon 5D mark2 for a day shot. I love the 7D for the fast AF on my 70-200mm while I love the 5D Mark2 with a rented 24-70mm lens.

I found that the video mode for both cameras are not as sharp as compare to what I saw from a video shot on HD video cam but this is personal view My video shot has a lot of hand shaking effects and I think the reason is because I am holding a heavy lens to pan in video mode.

When I went back home, I tried to compare the jpeg format picture from my laptop and I can't tell much difference between the 7D and the 5D Mk2 in terms of colours, richness. I do notice slightly more DOF of a subject between the crop and FF bodies. However, one distinct thing I noted is when I shot a church in the interior building, the white colour from the 5D tends to stand out slightly better from the 7D.

Can someone enlightened me how we can differentiate the photography taken between the crop and ff bodies.

You need IS or a decent camera stablisation system if you want to shoot video

joeman, first of all which angle of view do you like? FF is the original "wide" while crop is x1.6 zoom. Some ppl like one and hate the other. So consider whether you take more wide angle pics or zoomed-in pics. You can still go UWA or super telephoto on both types but the lens make-up is naturally different.

Second, FF photography reduces DOF since it is wider view; you have to step in closer to get the exact same picture composition and angle of view. That nearer distance would therefore shrink the DOF for the same lens and aperture setting. Most ppl think that is better as far as I have read, since it allows more significant isolation between subject and OOF areas.

5D Mk2 although a yr old is still a great cam; photographers are snapping awesome pics and videos with it so do not let its age fool you. What stops us from taking awesome pics is usually ourselves.

ya agree with icelava, see which one you prefer. your choices are quite vastly different, so not that hard to decide mah, not like choosing btw say, 40D and 50D. envy you to have such high budget.

Was in the same situation as you until I bought the 5DMkII a couple days ago.

I chose 5D2 over 7D because of the image quality. Due to the sensor size, 5D2 will give you better ISO performance and image quality. However if you are into action/sport photography, then 7D is probably a better choice, since it has a higher FPS than 5D2.

Both bodies have a wide array of nice lenses to go along with. At the end of the day it is just down to what function that you need the most in a camera body.

However if your concern is that 5D2 is older than 7D and hence "not as feature packed" then you might want to list down the features and see if they are something that you cannot live without.
