Hi all,
Need some advice.. I am interested to get a camera for diving use.

Is it better to get a waterproof cam ( lumix FT3) with housing or just a normal cam with housing??

I know this sound stupid.. But I really not sure which is better... :(

Thanks

There's no real difference in your example, if both the camera is using Underwater Casing/Housing... a 'waterproof' camera is only good for 3-5 metres... at the most 10 metre. Being waterproof doesn't mean it could survive any better at depth should your casing failed. Personally... it would be better to get a camera with good Image Quality and who's casing/housing is easily found or affordable... Panasonic's LX5 is a great camera both on land and underwater... but the casing/housing cost slightly above $1k (more $$$ then the camera).

thank diver-hloc for the advice...
Budget is a factor...

I just got the S95+WP-DC38 UW casing for $800..

What's your budget range?

Agree about the Budget part.. its easier for recommendation if we know your budget

Since Canon had announced Powershot S100... 2nd hand S95 would be easily available. ;)

If very less than $1k... 2nd hand Canon S95 + OEM casing
If around $1k... 2nd hand Canon S95 + Ikelite casing (a much better casing)

Other choice would by Canon G12 (but the OEM casing had a bad reputation for misting and flooding) or Olympus XZ-1 with its own OEM casing.

So, what's your budget...

I bought a Nikon AW100. Cheaper than the FT3.

your budget is a bit difficult to work with if your are looking for a camera and underwater casing to go scuba diving with.. $600 and up for a decent set, goes up to 40m deep usually..

The price range for waterproof camera like olymps mju tough series is also like $400-$600 and u..so far the deepest I,ve seen is 15m.. not for scuba diving, only snorkeling max..more common is 10m..

If u are looking for a camera that does shots for say water sports, maybe even in the pool or light snorkeling, <5m, I would recommend getting a good point and shoot at $400, leaving $50 for soft cases like dicapac..

Hope it helps.. if u can raise ur budget slightly, I think I saw someone selling 2nd hand s95 with underwater casing.. can check it out..

Edit: oops, I read as $450 was ur budget.. haha.. since u have a budget of 900, I would suggest s95 combi for scuba diving.. if u're just starting diving, don't left the frustration with dslr underwater take the fun out of diving.. not yet anyway..
