Apart

What is this rift that sets us apart?
To leave me here longing for your heart?
Night after night I gaze at the stars
Thinking of you, thinking of us...

I asked the Almighty, His Will for us
Laughter I hear, the angels and the stars
Shall I stay, with you in my heart?
Or is it a sin, till death do us apart?

I spoke to Sorrow, to lament on us
But she told me, to just trust the stars
I spoke to Pleasure, there's none in my heart
And she told me, there's none in hearts apart

Oh the sadness, the minutes we are apart!
Missing you dearly, the wretched in my heart!
Curse you Eros, curse you and the stars!
Why have us together, then forget about us?

- Me, 28/08/2011

Sanur Beach, Bali. There exists a time telling of my carefree days, before I met my wife, before I took up photography. There, I spent my days daydreaming and nights writing poetry. I wanted to pick up literature during my secondary school days, but alas...! Only 3 student in the entire cohort had applied...

Time is cruel; it really creeps by like a thief in the night. I can barely hold a pen the right way now, and writing on a paper seems foreign to me. Half a decade of university life and working environment had dulled me, and I can no longer find enough words to string together to save my life. Such is life, where almost everyone ends up being molded eventually into a zombie where we were told to dig in and "work hard from 8am to 6pm" so as to live "a good life". Gone are the days where Socrates, Plato and Aristotle spent their days in the agora debating on issues of the world.

Hello, Carefree Days. Hello, Youth. I barely knew you and you were gone. It first started with a river apart, then a sea. Now we are oceans apart and the time had finally come where I have to bid the final goodbye. Goodbye carefree days, farewell youth. You were a good friend, like Bing Bong once were. And you will forever be remembered and dearly missed...

The Last Hurrah

Tanah Lot, Bali. And with this photo, I conclude my Bali trip. Now sitting on my armchair and looking back, the Bali trip ended with a bag of mixed emotions. On one hand, we get landscapes that are hardly seen in SG. On the other, the landscapes lack that majestic factor when viewing in person, like US's National Parks or Niagara Falls. Many shots were a play in angles, which is why you see so many landscape photos of the same composition if you googled. Still, it is a good place to start a photography trip I guess, due to the safe nature of the place and the relative easiness of the shots.

Reflecting back, there's a lot that could be done better as both an organizer and a photographer. Unfortunately with the upcoming changes in life, my next chance for the foreseeable future is not in sight. In fact, I had already sold off my 16-35mm and will only be clearing backlogs from now on, if any. I guess this is it for this landscape thread? Haha. This is why I told myself that I cannot screw up this shot even though Tanah Lot is a notoriously difficult place to get a clean shot off, because this is the last landscape that I'll be shooting in a while. When the glory of the sunset was unveiling, I was so grateful to the Lord for providing such an awesome cloud formation that I might had shed a tear. What an awesome sendoff; this bittersweet feeling in my heart. In fact, the clouds were so epic that I had to blur it in order to put more focus in the foreground.

Will I miss this part of life shooting landscapes? Perhaps. I'll probably miss the racing against time to get the settings right, the anchoring of the tripod in the water and sand, and the cleaning of the tripod at night. When I first started out photography, part of my goal is to shoot awesome looking landscapes so that I can bring back nicer photos from holidays for memory's sake. Now looking at where I am, I'm still disappointed of course. There is still a sizable gap between me and the people that I'm looking at, namely Danker, Scintt, terenceleezy, and MGohzxc. But the clock had struck and my time is up; the cries of the firstborn will soon fill the air.

I'll probably get the new 16-35mm f/2.8 III, but that wouldn't be anytime soon. Perhaps 2018 or later? I had also learnt some new tricks from Justin Ng on shooting astro landscapes, but I guess I can only jot it down in my notebook for now. So, this is goodbye I guess? Will see you guys in 2018 or beyond, hopefully sooner. Best of luck to everyone and keep it up in producing inspiring works, heh. Ciao :)

I know that feeling. Congratulations on the soon to be new arrival. On another note, here's a thought. Since you have night duties, you'll be up all night. Look at taking some sunrise shots from your own apartment.

Either way, this is indeed a beautiful shot to end this series.
