You can crank the volume up or increase the audio gain in post. Just dun forget to use the Denoiser.

Reasons to crank down your volume recording level to the lowest level is to minimize the recording of room noise, ambient noise or static noise.

If I am using my shotgun mic, I will adjust the recording level to ZERO first. Using the dial or scroll button, I will adjust the recording to just one click after ZERO.

OR,

I will stand in the middle of the room or area of video shoot, I will increase the recording level until there is a movement of the audio bars. I will also use this settings if I am using internal recording mix.

Another example of using the internal camera mic with the latter settings.

From your experience, regarding Picture Style, is there a different in result for the follow settings?

- Standard (0,-4,-2,0)
- Landscape (0,-4,-2,0)
- Auto (0,-4,-2,0)
- Cinestyle (0,-4,-2,0)

I always shoot with Faithful Picture Style. It gives that soft look. I have shot before with Cinestyle but I do not what happen on why it gone missing from my camera.

You can try to look closely and observe, I bet you can see the difference in terms of color saturation and color "blow-out". I do not know how to explain about the color "blow-out". Certain profile, it will make the color is a little bit distorted in terms of brightness. That's how I would describe it.

My settings will be :-

Contrast = -4
Saturation = -4
Sharpness = -1
** Sharpness in post isn't the same when you capture it. For me, -1 is the sweetspot for me. The aliasing and moire isn't too obvious and I can live with it.

Cinestyle, I always shoot with Profile 9, I think.

Each picture style is already programmed with a algorithm. You cannot modify the algorithm. This is my minimal understanding based on what I have read online.

1. My bad my bad. When I mentioned -1, I was referring one click to left from the original settings. Sorry about that.

2. I am not into photography so I don't pay attention to the picture style. Heheheheh. I just point and shoot. Soon, I will attend a photography workshop just to expand my knowledge.

3. For Nathan, he already found the sweetspot to suit his style. I could understand on his settings. It has something to do with editing process. As he already mentioned in the video.

You are right. I did a skin tone test for Faithful and Standard Picture Style, I notice that Faithful style is more pinkish while Standard is more saturated and for Asian skin, it tends to be more yellowish. I also prefer Faithful picture style.

I also did a test for Faithful vs User Define 1 (Faithful), both seems to yield the same result. Do you use the User Define (Faithful) mode or Faithful mode?

I could not find my thread via the video showcase forum. Prolly, it was got index out since there is no new activity.

Nevertheless, 2014 is coming to an end. Looking back at this thread, it is the reflection of my video making learning journey.

Comments and criticisms made here are of great help to my learning journey. I would to thank forumers who take the time off to share experiences and knowledge. People that I met and have coffee through this thread, have a great impact on me.

Through this thread also, I have met awesome people like Rodney from BambooPictures who never shy to share honest opinions, tips and suggestions. I have even worked with him on couple occasions. It was great working experience.

This is the recent gig I worked with Rodney.

And then, there is also pettypoh who I communicate numerous times through messages about sharing video making guides and mistakes. Looking forward to work with him in making a video together in 2015. Need to free up a slot in my busy schedule.

And also, Bryan from SmartLocal. Met up with him at Peninsula for coffee. Guide him a walkthrough on some basics using a Sony VG30.

This thread is very fundamental in my learning curve. I have learned and improved a lot by just deconstructing the comments and criticisms received. There are times where information is so overloaded and I felt saturated. By sharing my mistakes here and on my blog, it gives me a breather and able to recompose myself. Today, I am still learning.

In order to keep me current, I always remind myself to unlearn and relearn. I never consider myself an expert in video making because there are real experts in this field and in this Clubsnap forum. I would like to consider myself advanced beginner or beginner intermediate.

To continue sharing on this thread, it will be tedious for others to start from page 1. That's the reason why I never updated in this thread.

If you aren't, sure. Just let me know what do you want to know about handling Sony VG30. What are the things that really bothers you ? I will help fill you in. What I shared with Bryan of SmartLocal is more of handling aspects and what to take note when shooting. Pretty much about it.
