My Videos - Learng and Making Them

Bro Daniyal,

SD Card
- I've tested Kingston Class 4 on 60D, 600D and 550D using full HD, after 5-10sec, video recording will halt.
- What brand and model of SD card are you using now?

Shooting 24p
- For 30P, 50P and 60P, even if you follow the 180 rule, it is still not as smooth as 24p?

frozentomtom>>> I have just came back from a solemnization video shoot.

Shooting in 24p
- It does give you the smooth and soft look compared to 30p, 50p and 60p.
- Setback that I faced juz now was flickering. I cannot pan too fast or less, I will get the flickering. And other thing, from good lighting condition to low lighting condition, the flickering will be very obvious.
- My take on 24p, you got to be very patient with your shoot.

SD Card
- I am using SD Class 10. That's it.
- For video, it has to be Class 6 and above. I believe some of my photographers friends are using at least Class 6 for their stills. All I know, we cannot afford to take risk when shooting clients' reception. Playing on the safe side.
- I have really no idea about the Class 4. Got to try it out Bro.

frozentomtom>>>

- Your tests means Class 4 is too slow to capture. Play safe, get the Class 10 SanDisk Extreme. I am using Silicon Power which is ok-ok. My SanDisk, I will swear by it.
- It is as smooth as other frames mode. But it gives that soft look, if I can trust my eyes. Anyway Bro, to me, it still doesn't bothers me just yet. Maybe once I gain more experience, I could help you in this department better.

hmm silicon power. I have heard only negative things about it.

eleveninth>>> Yupz. It is ok-ok lah. I had 3% failure rate in terms of "scratched clips". It is barely 3 months old of usage. For now, SP is my back up SD. I am using SanDisk as my main.

i used to use class 4 (but only photography) - felt bit slow to read, even erasing the photos took quite a while =)

now using a samsung class 10 .... zoom zoom zoom hehe ... worthwhile to purchase the higher speeds

Bro Daniyal,

Canon read/write speed is 5.89Mbyte per seconds, Class 4 which handles 4Mbps will hang, Class 6 can 6Mpbs but borderline for video footage, best to get Class 10 which can handle 10Mbps.

Bro Daniyal,

If my understanding is correct, what the article is saying that, the cross effect is most obvious for wide angle and less for tele end. When shooting at 100mm with crop sensor, you wouldn't get cross effect even when the ND fader is set to max at 9 stops.

Bro, seriously I cannot help you in this department. I don't really understand. But once I got hold a wide angle lens with a ND Fader, I will get back to you when I do a shoot. Sorry Bro. I also dun really understand.

.

Looks to be that way .... I have same problem when using wide angle. Will attempt on a tele and see how

According to this chart, if you are using Hercules 2-8 stops, by right, the cross effect will not be visible if you are using a 50mm lens. If your lens is set to 12mm, your operating range would be limited to 3 stops, ND4 to ND8.

12mm: ND4 to ND8 3 stop operating range
15mm: ND4 to ND16 4 stop operating range

18mm: ND4 to ND32 5 stop operating range

24mm: ND4 to ND64 6 stop operating range

35mm: ND4 to ND125 7 stop operating range

40mm: ND4 to ND175 7.5 stop operating range
50mm: ND4 to ND250 8 stop operating range
70mm: ND4 to ND350 8.5 stop operating range
100mm: ND4 to ND500 9 stop operating range

Bro Daniyal,

True enough, I set my lens to 55mm and at 8 stop, the ND filter's cross effect disappeared.

Thanks Bro,

Am confused with picture style settings, some forumers recommend standard or faith. Other forumers recommend "user define" picture style, sharpness and contrast set all the way to left. What would you recommend?

frozentomtom>>> Trust your eyes Bro. Shoot the video that you want others to see the way you see it. You can't go wrong. Slowly, you will find the picture settings that you like. For me, Neutral because it gives a little bit of grayish cast.

This is my settings.
Picture Style - Neutral
Sharpness - I set it at 2nd stop so that it will give me room in post. And it is not easy to sharpen in post. You really really need sharp eyes like Dave Dugdale. His videos are freaking sharp.
Contrast - 0
Saturation - 0

Daniyal,

1. Yeah, not only sharp, the WB and contrast are all spot on. He recommended shoot it flat using Marvel Low picture style. Would you recommend?

frozentomtom>>> Sorry. My bad my bad. My contrast and saturation is all the way to the left. And for the Marvel Low picture style, I have never try.
