In military organizations, the practice of carrying Colours, Standards or Guidons, act as a rallying point for troops. It is thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt some 5,000 years ago.

16237155836_7d09011506_o.jpg

As armies became trained and adopted set formations, each regiment's ability to keep its formation was potentially critical to its, and therefore its army's success in a battle. In the chaos of battle, not least due to the amount of dust and smoke on a battlefield, soldiers needed to be able to determine where their regiment is - as such the need for a Standards bearer.

16278455355_ce71d5c1f6_o.jpg

Due to the advent of modern weapons, and subsequent changes in tactics, Standards and Colours are no longer prominent displayed in a battlefield. The traditions of Standards and Colours are however still used in ceremonial and formal events.

The Volkssturm was a German national militia of the last months of World War II. It conscripted males between the ages of 13 to 60 years who were not already serving in some military unit as part of a German Home Guard.

In the Battle for Berlin, members of the Volkssturm (mainly young boys from the ages of 13-18 and old men) were used as a last-ditch attempt to defend the city.

The Waffen SS were the armed units of Nazi Party. Many soldiers in the Waffen SS distinguished themselves in combat, and in a small number of cases, became notorious for their atrocities.

The People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs or in short NKVD was the elite law enforcement agency of the Soviet Union that directly executed the power of rule for the Soviet Communist Party.

The NKVD was a well armed force and unlike the German Waffen SS, did not field any armored or mechanized units. In WW2, the NKVD was used to prevent the Red Army units from collaspsing and is estimated to kill over 300,000 Red Army troops - brutally putting down retreating troops, mutinies and mass desertions in the Red Army.

During World War II some terrain made it nearly impossible to use modern vehicles to transport supplies. That’s were mules came in. Mules (a donkey-horse hybrid) are hardy animals, well-known for their endurance, stamina, and sure-footedness.

16454353631_9e62789f5b_o.jpg

Mules work well as pack animals and can generally carry loads up to 90 kg. They are also known for their strong sense of self-preservation, which is sometimes interpreted as stubbornness.

The maneki-neko (in Japanese meaning "beckoning cat") is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman) which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner.

16380370500_ece215d28c_o.jpg

16380370490_5c584cf58d_o.jpg

The maneki-neko figurine depicts a cat (usually made of ceramic or plastic) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—often at the entrance—of shops, restaurants and other businesses.

It is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, beckoning cat, or fortune cat in English.

The Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944 – 25 January 1945) was a major German offensive campaign launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in Belgium.

16435737870_19ef6974ab_o.jpg

Bastogne is a hub city that commanded several important roads in the area and was a key German objective from the start of the offensive - no less than seven major roads communicating with all parts of the area goes through this city.

The Siege of Bastogne (portrayed in HBO Band of Brothers Episode 6 "Bastogne") at the Belgian town of Bastogne forms part of the larger Battle of the Bulge.

Replacing American soldiers killed and wounded in combat units during World War 2 was done on an individual basis. Except for those soldiers who arrived as a unit at the beginning of the war, men from the Depot "pool" were sent individually to units to replace casualties (unlike the German Army which would rather pull battle depleted units off the line and replacing them with a fresh, rested unit instead).

16032909403_fd08935a05_o.jpg
16465415770_62c3f84ab0_o.jpg

The individual replacement policy means combat units who survived from the beginning of the war would continue fighting for years ! i.e. the longer a soldier survived, the longer he would continue fighting (becoming a veteran soldier of the unit).

This practice of sending individual soldiers (i.e. replacements) from a Depot to depleted infantry companies was often a disadvantage to both the soldier and the company.

16680860912_e880eeaced_o.jpg
16061925473_9a5be58959_o.jpg

Firstly the replacement was not battle tested - for example the soldier had completed basic training but had never been put through real combat or infantry duties.

Because the new men (replacements) were not always properly trained or inexperienced in combat, they sometimes caused extra risk for the others. If a replacement proved to be capable, then he would be accepted and become part of the tightly knit group.

16100711414_404b553867_o.jpg

Secondly the new soldiers sometimes had difficulty assimilating - feeling alienated and unwelcomed and at first resented by the battle-hardened men because they were replacing buddies who had been killed or wounded.

Some replacements quickly became casualties, so there was wariness among the old-timers at first, a reluctance to even learn the name of the newly arrived soldier....

Tanker Jackets (worn by the depicted figure above) were issued to American WW2 soldiers that were assigned to tank and reconnaissance units, armoured infantry units in half-tracks, etc. for protection against cold weather.

This jacket was much favoured by soldiers in the field due to its good thermal protection and ease of wearing.

"Fury"

The M4 Sherman Tank was the most numerous battle tank used by the United States and some other Western Allies in World War 2.

16792822485_b90fd55ddc_o.jpg

The Sherman was a medium tank and thinly armoured (at only 76mm thick) - thus it had a worrying propensity to burst into flames when hit !
