The Royal Horse Artillery formed in 1793 was to provide heavy-gun (artillery) support to its cavalry. With its artillerymen all riding into battle - on horses, wagons or limbers - the Royal Horse Artillery was able to keep up with the troopers it was meant to support. Guns used include six pounders, but later with some nine-pounder guns.

The Royal Horse Artillery wore light cavalry uniforms of blue with gold lace and red facings. Their overalls were grey with a red stripe and they wore the distinctive Tarleton helmets.

NA183 Standing Officer (French 16th Dragoon) (King and Country NA183)

35682901671_d825ab98cb_o.jpg

"Originally formed as mounted infantry, the Emperor decreed that the Dragoons would be better suited to fight as dismounted soldiers than any of their cavalry compatriots. Although they never liked losing their horses, the Dragoons performed admirably in this new role for a limited period."

The word "Dragoon" originally meant mounted infantry, who were trained in horse riding as well as infantry fighting skills. However, usage altered over time and during the 18th century, Dragoons evolved into conventional light cavalry units and personnel. Dragoon regiments were established in most European armies during the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

During the Napoleonic Wars, Dragoons generally assumed a cavalry role, though remaining a lighter class of mounted troops than the armored cuirassiers.

Napoleon had problems to find the right horses for his Dragoons. In 1805 approximately 6.000 of them were without mounts and were organized into 4 foot dragoon regiments. Their duty was to guard the artillery reserves and the baggage trains.

Dragoons wore green coats, white breeches and tall black boots. The distinctive headgear of the Dragoons was their brass, neo-Grecian style, helmet with its black horsehair. Armed with straight sabers and muskets, their muskets were longer and had longer range of fire than light cavalry's carbines.

Depiction above is a Manchu Imperial Guards Bannerman in battle armor. Banner system is the military organization used by the Manchu tribes. Manchu tribes of Manchuria (now Northeast China) conquered and controlled China in the 17th century. The Qing dynasty is the last imperial dynasty of China lasting from 1644 to 1912.

Thousands of years of recorded history...nothing changed much since :bsmilie:

Corruption in China is not the product of modern times - and is often mentioned in history books of every dynasties.

Back in dynastic China the implementation and enforcement of laws and regulations were the task of local officials. Their official salary was entirely at their use, but they also had to finance office expenses, pay their assistants and offer lavish treatment to higher ranking state officials.

In this complex system it was only normal that government officials would trade their influence in general for money. To protect themselves from punishments by state businessmen, officials, military leaders and other high ranking state employees formed strong cliques i.e. 官官相护 (officials shield one another, cover up)
