Hi,

Newbie in firework photography here.

Went for firework shot last night, and only 1 or 2 turn out ok, while the others are clouded with smoke.

I only used F/5.6, ISO200 and 2 seconds exposure and found that the results are pretty disastrous.

Would like to find out from members here:
1. How to avoid smoke?
2. Does BULB mode work with short exporure to capture only "burst" that is nice? If yes, how?
3. for those with 8 seconds exposure, wouldn't the long exposure causing smoke to be captured by the sensor?

Cheers!!

1. How to avoid smoke?

Try different locations. There might be some locations where you can avoid seeing those smokes.

Though you can let your imagination run wild and plan all you can, ultimately, getting smoke or not is still fated: It all depends on how strong the wind during that very moment.

2. Does BULB mode work with short exporure to capture only "burst" that is nice? If yes, how?

Eeerrrrr....Didn't realize that Pana cam has bulb mode. Which model are you using huh? :P

Anyway, if you are usig a dSLR through bulb mode, and just want to capture that very nice moments that are nice, the technique is to bring along a black card or black cloth, make sure that the black card or black cloth you bring along with you are non-reflective, and enough to cover your lens. Bulb it, and only take away to black cloth or black card with you want that specific nice burst to be captured.

3. for those with 8 seconds exposure, wouldn't the long exposure causing smoke to be captured by the sensor?

I think this should be best answered by FZ5owner...:bsmilie: :bsmilie:

bro, me no pro, just a lucky newbie with fireworks.

with my experiences taking fireworks answering ur questions : -
Q1 - smoke can be avoided, (JD's advice) aim your shot when they beginning to fire the first burst. (below 2 shot taken yesterday, dedicated to JD for his advice)

#1 1st shot abt 3-4secs from first burst
215.jpg

#2 2nd shot
321.jpg

timing & patience is very crucial here........ (FZ5 processing takes a while before you can take the next shot). location oso play a vital role oso. I was there for almost all the 17 days of fireworks.........ppl say i siao, but is a learning experience for me.

Q2 - wat camera are u using?? FZ5 do not hv buld mode leh.

Q3 - yes & no lor. (will post one taken with 8 secs later)

join us lor for the next fireworks lor.......:dunno: dunno when ???
share & learning from each other, tats the lumixer spirit.............kekekekeke

cheers,

Thanks for the valuable input, man!! :)

I am using EOS 350D, and of course, without prior experience of firework photo shoot, so just shoot and shoot. :bsmilie:

Yes, the first conclusion after clapping hand at the Esplanade Bridge was, only the first couple of shots are good when there's clear sky without smoke. When it's after the heartshaped fireworks, it's already so filled with smoke that exposure of 2 seconds will capture most of the smoke.

Wind speed is not something we can control, therefore, probably lower aperture with longer exposure maybe the answer?

Oh, when is the Singapore Fireworks Festival going to be ah?

Cheers!!

I think longer exposure with lower aperture will not solve the smoke problem.

The smoke problem, somehow through my observation from other photos posted in CS, can be avoided if you:

1. Are not staying too close, up front to take the shot (so, typical kiasu Singaporean mentality does not work here huh?)
2. Leave your lens as wide open as possible, try not to zoom.
3. Find some nice foreground or background with the wide angle

I guess you might want to join FZ5owner for the coming opportunity. I know he is not siao, and I really respect his spirit in picking up the skill within such a short time - 17 days only!

I'm one of them. smoke or not, it does not matter........ leave the shot natural, nice and appreciated, we call tat "Art of photography". everyone appreciate differently......

Try again during Singapore Fireworks Festival. But hor, now i dun know wat to shoot liao..........:dunno:

its weird though my 2nd attempt, the 3 minute fireworks turned out better than my 3rd attempt..the last day one...guess it cuz of the smoke... :nono:
