My Round the World Trip

Hey PChong,
He is Indiana Jones in the making..
I posted this pic as a conitunation to the first one where he was a tiny speck at the top of the roof :)
I am starting to read your blog.. makes me miss travelling. talking and sharing them is the one way to keep the memories alive. Let's keep it going

ps - I need a camera like yours

Now that you mentioned :) I was staring at the photo but didn't get it :( This guy has wings...amazing! Probably better than that French spiderman.

Is he a rockclimber? =D it's something that I would do...or maybe ve already done.. =P

May I ask what's ur profession? I admire ur passion and stamina. I only lasted for a month. lol

Just want to point out, what Pupuce would experience in sg job market is different from an overseas student. Students come back with qualifications that are beneficial to their career advancement. I would say that her sacrifice is substantial and overseas students have none. In some cases, student do not even suffer financial damage, especially when they are on scholarships or exemptions off their studies.

At the end of the day, all it matters is that u've no regrets and live ur life to the fullest and happily, Pupuce. Good on ya.

Jordan - Dead Sea, Jordan Rift Valley
Swim to Israel and the West Bank on the opposite side?
( I know - lots of dust in this photo) but can some tell me if I should have kept the palm trees out?

I am no expert but I personally like hving the palm trees over there but can't say I like the lamp posts and the building on the right but if no choice then no choice lah..haha. Even without tripod, this is really ok to me.

Hi Pupuce

Just wanted to say that for someone new to DSLR just before you embarked on the trip, I think your photos are really not too bad..
yes, there might be areas that need to improve on etc etc.. but given the equipment, and the conditions, i think you did a great job... cheers..

Well done Pupuce, very inspiration thread. You just reminded me that there's more to life than what i'm doing day in day out. Thanks!

I think the palm trees and even the lamp posts make the picture more interesting. Provides some foreground interest. The house on the right is another matter though...doesn't do anything from me, and is a distracting silhouette, but mainly because its plain. Though the person at the slope part of the roof provides some interest, the rest of the roof id too bare and appears too large in the pic. Perhaps if you walk to the left a few tens of meters, you might get a perspective where you can still get the sun (setting or rising?) and the palm trees in silhoutte. I know this is not always possible, so we make the best our of the shot.

I did see that, but if you place them together in a picture story, with the jumping shot, it makes it more powerful.

ps - I hope its more than just the camera...:-)

You can swim across to ISrael and the west bank, if you dare!

Nice! But I see some fungus appearing in the photo.. Must be really hard to keep the lens clean! But still.. i guess its not within control.. Still, good job! ;)

Fungus..? Maybe its my fingerprint :) I had one of those dust pen with me throughout but it was hard to maintain it well. When I brought it for servicing after my return, they nearly fainted at the amount of dust in there ( and I didnt even change lens at all for 15 mths( My camera is really worn out and even the prints on the buttons are faded.. time to upgrade?

I am going to learn how to do some post production and maybe remove all these spots so the photo will look better!
Any recommendation on photo edit software? I have photoshop 7

Hey fallenphoenix,
You know backpacking sounds so cool but behind the scene, it is exhausting, bothersome, dangerous and I hate having no one to blame if something goes wrong! haha!

Sales is my forte and that is what i do! How I managed to convince myself to leave my job was " sales is a portable skill and I can use it anywhere" but I did prepare myself mentally tha I might have to work behind mcdonald's counter if there is a economy downturn!

I am not sure if he is a professional rock-climber. He is just a local guy, probably having some fun at the old city and entertaining the tourists who happen to be there. I see you are an avid rockclimber.. would you do what this crazy Indiana Jones at petra did? No safety precaution or anything,, my heart always skip a beat when he makes a flying leap.

#5 Jordan - Petra, The ancient route up the sacrificial site
You can take a ride on a donkey or walk up in the 40degrees heat.. I feel safer on my own feet but watch the donkey's poop. Imagine the priest taking the very same route whenever there was a religious ceremony thousands of years ago

I have been one of those who has been pestering you to write a book or at least star a blog. He he he.

If I were you, I would first start writing. Anything and everything that comes to memory - in whichever order. The important ones like getting pickpocketed, getting mugged will stay with you for a long time. But the emotional ones might get erased but these are the incidents that will tug at a reader's heart and will make them connect to you.

Once you have a sizeable chunk written down, then you can reorganize as you feel appropriate.

I guess if you are serious about getting the book published, you'll have to send excerpts to publishers. Or find friends who know someone in the publishing world. Just you made it on the 15 month RTW journey, if you want to publish your travel impressions badly enough, nature will find a way.

Good luck on your journey. I am thoroughly enjoying your insights on travelling. Keep them coming. Cheers.

Hi there, You are right, i should pen down those thoughts as memory fades and i hope to cherish these as long as i can.

There were a few emotional moments, some logical, some unexplainable.. I remember the feelings that washed over me and tears welled up when i stood In the church of nativity, bethehelm. It was the most surreal moment for me having grow up reading much from the bible.

It will take time to complete this project but for now i just need to pick up that pen and start writing. Thanks for your help and encouragement.

Addiditonal note added
Thanks to the encouragement from those who is keeping this thread alive by giving opinions and critics on the photos, I have also decided to put the journey into words and sharing the memories. As you read on, you will see how the journey started and how the plans have changed and how I discover the world and myself at the same time.

i think he is referring to the top center... there is a dot there. looks like sensor dust.

photoshop 7 is quite old already but still usable, u can use the clone tool to clone out the spots.

those are sensor dirt. did u learn how to do and set sensor cleaning in your D80? check your manual. it will help to reduce it, though i can't say how much is the impact since my photographic trip never last more than 16 days (i've worked overseas up to 8mths though).

place your cursor over the buttons and wait for the label to appear. or hunt the menu.
look for clone stamp.
select size of clone stamp, usually about 100-200px.
press and hold alt, while clicking on an area of similar color and tone.
release alt, then click on the dust.

it is for photoshop elements. i guess it should be roughly similar.
