My Round the World Trip

Many people suggested to me about publishing a book but I dont know where to start. If I want to do that, have to get started soon as the memories are fading. I kept a dairy and I dont blog regularly because in Africa, it was out to get onto the internet and too much time needed when I am on the road
You are too kind with regards to my photos.. I am not a experienced photographer and also a little lazy - one cam, one lens and no tripod.. sometimes i dont know if lessening the equipment is worth the trade off as i cant get nice photos in low light conditions. at that time, it makes sense when my bag gradually went from 16.5kg to 22kg mid way of my journey.
Being a new user here, I thought my photos were pretty decent.. till i check the site. geezzz, did you see those at the critique corner.. will I ever dare to post my photo there one day??:bigeyes:

Sort of like a theme Michael Yamashita did for Marco Polo. Perhaps you can take a look at that published book on his journey on where to start. The project took 2 years to complete to follow the path on his travels. However you have started in Africa, so try to think of a traveler that went through Africa then to other parts of the world.

some ppl enjoy it that way mah.
we must always remember different people different personality. it is common mistake to believe that there is only one way to enjoy travelling, as u r more likely to meet like minded people on the same type of trip, and independent people are more likely to be more opinionated.
packaged tour is not always bad for everyone, it suits some ppl. likewise F&E or rugged round the world tour is also not always best for everyone, it is not just about the freedom, but also the hassle of dealing with things yourself, and tireness of long duration travelling. and all these are also affected by factors like the place u go, and whether travelling alone or with grps, and how good is your agency.
some ppl miss home a little, some ppl miss home a lot, some ppl dun miss home at all, and some ppl dun want to go home... :bsmilie: .... this is such a variable world.

IMHO, both Zoosh and Manwearpants are right!
It really does take away the joy of travelling when one is too calculative versus frugal.
I remember when i was in Middle East, I joined up with a French Arabic living in india and an italian - the 3 of us cant be anymore different. Me- frugal, Italian - laidback. Arabic french - calculative (he claims that he is this way because living in india has make him wary of locals ripping him off)
He once bargain the pants off a banana seller - and when he thought he was being ripped off, argued and demanded for his money back. later, he realised that all the stalls were selling about the same price and he got it wrong and the cheaper bananas were in another city. He was deeply embarrassed and told me he'll hide behind us whenever we walk pass the banana seller .:embrass: all for the price of what.. 10cents? I did think of strangling him at that time!
The plus side - with the 3 different personalities combined and after travelling together for 3 weeks, we worked out a "great act" when bargaining when the hotel owners in Middle East
heheh! Everyone is different, for sure (thank God for that) and I have nothing against package tours. (i used to go on package tours too, due to time constraint and have never backpack before)
people should know their own reasons for wanting to travel - whatever that rocks their boats.
Only one/two thing irks me - narrow minded travellers who are not opening their eyes, heart and soul to new surroundings, new food, new culture and always expecting things to be run their way or their country's way. People who are not respectful of other people's culture and religion also gets on my nerves - like wearing low sexy top/short shorts in muslim countries etc. (oh yes, i've met them)
All they want is "tick off the list and tell their friends they have been there"
These kind of travellers drives me up the wall!

Many has seen and photgraphed Petra. How many saw a local stuntman clamber from the ancient building, without any aid of ropes and get himself down from where he is standing now. everytime he makes a jump from one pillar to the other, my heart skips a beat. We watch in awe till he arrives to the ground safely and in fact join us for a tea at the coffeeshop where we were having our rest.(bad photo though because of the harsh glare)

I have been one of those who has been pestering you to write a book or at least star a blog. He he he.
If I were you, I would first start writing. Anything and everything that comes to memory - in whichever order. The important ones like getting pickpocketed, getting mugged will stay with you for a long time. But the emotional ones might get erased but these are the incidents that will tug at a reader's heart and will make them connect to you.
Once you have a sizeable chunk written down, then you can reorganize as you feel appropriate.
I guess if you are serious about getting the book published, you'll have to send excerpts to publishers. Or find friends who know someone in the publishing world. Just you made it on the 15 month RTW journey, if you want to publish your travel impressions badly enough, nature will find a way.

About this guy... is he from israel?? oops, just kidding ah but they are really known for getting the best deals while travelling. Follow them, cant go wrong!
anyway, I think this guy is a little over the top when it comes to being frugal..Honestly, I never knew which hostel I'll stay till arrive in town, or at the most, the night before i arrive into town. On top of that, he introduces people to a teahouse which he hasnt even tried and it is like the other travellers has no mind of their own to decide on their own accomodation and go when told by "someone"?
I tried to put myself in this situation and wonder if i'll go just because some guy i met told me so..
If he has stayed there, possibly.
If he has not and we are planning to meet there, yes.
If he has not tried it- NO, I'll prefer to make my decision
Even if he is very very cute like Jude Law, still NO.. See, You cant trust people... he recommends you something and that is because he is hoping to gain something out of it and not because it is good for you

I recently retired from my regular employment, and decided to focus on my passions. I have also been travelling, and shooting...though I lug a medium format camera and almost always shoot on a tripod.
I think blogging is a good tool to retain the memories, and can be the base for a book. I am hoping I can do for my travel pics.
I don't think I have been too kind on your photography. Your pictures are very interesting, as they capture the human element. And evokes an emotion. Photography is not about technical perfection. Its about capturing the moment...the soul. Looking at a photograph should bring the viewer the feeling the photographer had when he/she took the photograph. Having a good visualization and camera technique helps.
p.s. my blog, as per the first one in my signature, contains some documentation on my recent journey to the South West USA - allowing me to re-live, and share with others the feelings I got when I was at Yosemite, Antelope Canyon, The Grand Canyon. Please do take a look.

See, this is an example of a great pic...the person stretching out on Petra...must tell a story. Is he a raider of the lost arc? Is he cleaning the wall? Looks like he is trying to open the circular door or something...

dun get me wrong, i wasn't approving of this behaviour.
before u know what u r aiming for, the basic gear is usually sufficient, though i will think that a backup body and lens, or a compact/film camera in a separate location, still make sense, esp for a long travel. i didn't think low light conditions are very impt, as most of our experience is in daylight.
i've shared travel photos in talks before, and then i realise the story component of my pics are still weak. for your pictures, so far, the contents selected still show a lack of interaction and personal experience, perhaps for the proportion u put up of tele shots of animals. there will be many things to work on that, and it can be personal and subjective

the tiny aeroplane in the frame also helps in imagination.
zoosh, there were quite a few low light sitiuations- when the animals come by to the waterhole at night, sunrise, sunsets especially.
I know what you mean about the story component and I hope that there will be a more pics down the road that will tell a story to the viewers. can you share some tips - how to tell a story component for landscape shot?
I so appreciate your comments and by all means be harsh on the photo if you have to. I read some notes at the critque corner ... wos scary man!
