Botswana - Chobe National Park, Old and Broken
Older bull elephants often have one broken tusk, the result of either a serious fight with another bull or a break caused by uprooting a tree. Generally an elephant’s pair of tusks look alike but they can also be distinctly different: one long, the other short and stumpy or one straight, the other curved and pointing in a different. Tusk shapes and sizes are always a good “fingerprint” in recognizing individuals, in addition to the shape and tears in their ears.

oic, brave girl, you must be very young, let me guess, mid 20s to 30s.

Hahah.. like I was saying in the forum.. to disperse the idea that I am a gap year student with no committments, no cares in the world where rich parents are paying for my trip.. I was 38 years old when I left for the journey, earned a pretty decent salary, nice apartment in town , drives a cabriolet and have many small luxuries. It was really hard to give up all these and worse when you think about what will happen when you come back to Singapore.

Its true that its not too different from a student going overseas for studies and come back.. the difference is when you are young, you have lesser to lose.. that makes one hellva difference :0

TS, salute to you... I just dream off but never really pack my bag and go... Waiting for you great Photos..

Hello Spikenap,
So many has said that to me , " i wish i can do that"
all i can say is, everyone can do it if they want it bad enough;)
that said, I have to say it boils down to how passionate one is about travelling. There will always be something in the way, be it money, committments, job, family, your dog, your cat blah blah...and the biggest obstacle - FEAR

Same for you, It is a dream now but one day it will materialise for you if it is really what you want.
Cheers..

your pics are great...kept them well exposed and rich in color

Namibia - Dune 45
(we arrived here at 5am for our climb to get the Sunrise. Looking at the curves and the angle of the dune, it looks like an impossible feat.. as we found out, You take one step forward but you'll fall back by two steps - must be fit to do this or just miss the sunrise and wait for the rest to come down and then go for breakfast

Thank you for your feedback.
Do pop in often and give me more comments on the photos and advice on how to make them better. Photography is a big learning curve and it seems so hard to get there:(

My budget was 40K for the 12 months but managed to extend to 15 months without inccuring extra cost. This amount include my RTW ticket, sightseeing, bus/train/car/extra flights, food, neccessities and studying spanish

Some countries cost less and some cost more. especially if you going for specific sightseeing. The bulk of my expenses was the following -

I did safari in 3 african countries (South Africa, Namibia, Botswana) which cost me about USD 1500
Diving in Mozambique which cost USD60 per dive x3
Gorilla trekking permit in Uganda which cost USD500. (excluding the driver and 4x4 to get there)
Trip to Antartica costing me USD4000.
My round the world ticket costing me S$7600.
1 1/2 months in Belgium, Paris, Italy (milan, Genova, Bologna, Florence, Rome) incurred about Euro800.
After netting out, I have about 25000 expenses

I travel very very very cheaply.. sleeping in the cheap room available in hostels, on roof tops in Morocco because it only cost USD3 per night, sleeping with african family and hosts in Europe. friends of mine who ask their friends to host me if I am in their city.
I often meet up with other travellers to cross borders or share car rentals as it will lower the cost for me and them.
I eat street food or do local market shopping and cook dinner in hostel kitchen, and occasionally treat myself in restaurants
In Central America, on some days I was only spending USD15 per day including accomodation, food and lots of free sightseeing like trekking and hiking without guide.

One note - The faster you travel, the more it will cost you

Lastly, I also didnt have 15 months of annual leave although I did ask for a 12 months sabbitical from my company which i have been with for 10 years, they turned me down and so I say good bye to my job

que sera sera... No one could asnwer the question about my future at that time so I make plans for the worst scenario - I might have to wait on tables or served at starbucks upon my return but I calculated the risk and decided to take it.

wow.. i am really impressed.. the amount of money spent is really not alot.. i was expecting more.. anyway.. with that budget.. i think u really really roughed it out.. my admiration to you..
i m sure u r very proud of what you have done.. will definitely be checking out this thread for alot more photos to come.. ;)

oic, brave girl, you must be very young, let me guess, mid 20s to 30s.

becareful if you are staying in those cheap hostel where you need to share rooms, your belongings must take care. I will suggest you dont tell anyone in the hostel that you are travelling around world, because naturally people will think you must be damn rich to do this and carry lots of $$ and theft is very common in hostel. By the way the hostels room you stayed are they of mix gender or ladies only?

Hey Rocketatw,
I was staying in hostels throughout and usually in a dormitory as it is more cost efficient. Some days when I really need some space for myself or there is no dormitory, will i have a private room. I dont think it is common to find all girls dormitory and usually it is mix with both males and females.

I dont have anything to steal... haha.. my backpack only carries my neccessities. My most precious will be my D80 and 18-200mm VR, passport and cash (which is stash in 2-3 different places for backup purposes)
I was mugged in Senegal, snatched in Chile, pickpocket in argentina plus stolen by a danish girl in hostel (i know, so many people didnt believe that a Danish will stole but she did)
apart from these, my experiences has been pleasant and memorable.

Firstly, this thread should be at http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=125

Secondly, just wonder how much you will be spending for 15mths, I spend about SGD$8K (all in ) in my recently 1mth Europe Trip covering 5 countries. staying in 3 stars hotels and simple meals. Ok, maybe you will say that is Europe, but i guess any countries will need average spending of about SGD $3-5k per month. So 15mths will be like SGD 45K to 75K.

Thirdly, how to take 15months annual leave, not many of us can do it even if we have the cash unless he or she is jobless.

there are many places that are very much cheaper than in europe, plus u can pay the full amount a tourist does, or closer to the locals who pay a hell of a difference. just look not too far away at indonesia, and u will see the difference between the resorts and the real world outside that.

there are some costs that are more unavoidably expensive - notably flights, guides and 4 wheel drive. and the way to get around it, is to take long buses and ferries, and go to places that dun need guides and 4WD. but that takes away the fun and add on to the tireness of travel. i've been through those 8-16hrs bus/train rides that i dun want to relive, if possible.

sometimes this cost is so expensive, that whether u make yourself suffer or spend a luxurious (by local standards) time, that is not going to make much of a difference to the overall cost.

Botswana - Okavango Delta, Water Lily

u have very much captured the essence of composition and story. the elements inside this picture is very very effective.

travel photography do not significantly differs from general photography, as a lot of things are in common. what differs is in travel photography, the very essence is that you move on and explore new things, and as places changes, u capture what is representative, iconic, reminiscient and nostalgic about that place, and it is this part that makes it different, or else it have the same component of candid, streets, buildings, scenaries, journalism, events and portraits, all depending on what one is interested in. for me, i'm more drawn towards human characters though that is often one of the most tricky of all. 2nd thing is as we are mostly in the open, dealing with different light condition, is impt. it is so impt that in my untrained photographic life, my knowledge and familiarity of flash remains totally vestigial. my only successful flashed photograph is a picture taken when someone else flashed at the same time.

http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3357102&postcount=2

in the above picture, u have a backlit situation, which u may or may not be aware. in order to capture more of the flower in sufficient light, u can tilt yourself (difficult in the boat), or tilt the flower such that more of the white part is enface, thereby reducing the areas that is dark in shadow. i think that is equally effective as a composition. i read that u can fill in light with a flash, but since i dunno how to get a good flash shot, i shall say no further. third thing is post processing, with which u need sufficient latitude and image quality in the original file, and then u selectively brightened up the areas that are dark, and again that is too technical for girls whom i think will rather do the more original but better way of getting things right from the start.
