My Round the World Trip

Can't believe I've missed this AMAZING thread till now. Really inspiring!

There are 23 pages now. Do you remember where I last stopped? :)

Timbuktu really looked out of this world. With the sandstorm, it does makes sense why women don the hijab. i think it is very practical to have a piece of cloth that you can cover your eyes, nose and mouth with. Unfortunately, this useful piece of cloth has been taken out of context.

Hey you've been missing for a while!!
Yes, it's page 23 already and I still remember how you first helped me get the photos page going!

You have quite a bit of catching up to do;)
Timbuktu is out of this world.. if you misbehave, you know where you will be send to!

Mali - Timbuktu, This is how you do your marketing

Wow! My respect to pupuce! If I were to travel alone to so many countries, don't know can come back alive. Anyway, wall of text, will have to start reading from beginning. Btw, do you plan to make these photos and writting into a book? Last time during my trip, I finished almost 80% (yet to finish ;p ), would like to edit it soon.

Hey 007, Actually.... I dont know how I came back alive too..hahah! Delving back into my memories and I see myself making some stupid moves, taking risks which is way beyond my imagination and never thought I would have prior to my trip. Northern africa and Western africa segments left me tired, dirty and glad to be alive :)

I am trying to sort out the photos as I go along on this Thread. Reason being there are so many photos that depicts the travel scenes and so hard to decide which one goes into my coffee table book...
I dont know if to choose just beautiful landscapes or those that tells a story but might not be as picturesque:)

Sure! Bookmarked this thread and your Blog liao. :D

Can't wait for more. :)

Forgo half a sunny Saturday to play catching up to your thread till current. Ok, it's that riveting!

To summarise it so far, you were 38 when you decided to give up your 5-figure sales job of 10 years, sold your cabriolet, got rid of creature comforts to pursue your if-not-now-then-when travelling dream. Embarking on a 15 months solo round-the-world trip that took you from Antartica to Zimbabwe that covered 28% of planet earth (which I reckon should be more?) with just a D80 and a 18-200 lens, roughing it out in places, bearing hazards and discomforts. Along the way, experiencing different cultures and sights, taking in spectacular shots (Dead Sea Jordan Rift Valley, Granada etc) and making new friends. Once back, got settled down, gotten a D90, and raring to go again.

This is probably a prime example of living life in moments, which has been deservingly amazing, inspiring and liberating all at one go. Of all the photographs you posted, this (with added speech bubble) probably crystalises what I (or many of the readers out there) would be thinking (pse remove if you find it offending) - that the world is at your feet; if only you break the chains and take a step out.

RTW.jpg

My take so far is focus on your travelling and less on equipment and gears. Because sometimes getting too hard on capturing a "perfect" shot could be self-limiting, since you confessed to be more of a traveller-photog rather than the other way round. In my personal view, you joined the ranks of some great contributors here like Giantcanopy and Andrewine (there are others too, but to move and strike a resonating cord within is a personal thing altogether). I agree with some forumners out there to put your exeriences in print. That way, you would't have to work anymore!

In short, you're one lady with balls. Keep sharing please. I'm gonna check out your blogs too. Again, yeah, it's that riveting.

:bsmilie::bsmilie:......what a photo and tagline..:thumbsup:

I can only afford 2 months for a road trip from here to Harbin (subject to approval and exhausting all my annual leave) and I was thinking over and over about it, thinking about the southern Thailand issue, how to cross and all the issues.. After reading your thread, heck, I am going to do it this year. :D

2 months or 2 years.. doesnt matter:) just do it.

I had same worries about border crossing prior to my trip. I read and did research and the more I read, the more scared and worried I got.
What if there are no buses connection to the next town? What If i got stuck at the border? What if there is danger? What if, what if.. a million of those questions.
But I realised that with such travelling, unknown factor is the norm. There could be a coup d'etat and the borders will be closed. There could be other natural disasters that caused some delays, etc etc. But that is the thrill and with flexibility and adaptablity, we will always make it through.

So take it easy and enjoy whatever comes your way!

** the photo is just so cute and I love it!

#20 Mali - Timbuktu, Djinguereber mosque
the Mouloud festival sees about 25,000 people walk around Djinguereber mosque 3 times to make the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

#1 Burkina Faso - Ouagadougou
After Mali, Burkina Faso is like a breath of fresh air. It is organised!!, what more can I say? (there are even seat numbers on the buses and it leaves on time!!)
A walk through the marketplace, brought some surprising finds of spices and food.
I found out that, like the Malians , they dont like the camera to be direct at them although they didnt come chasing after me with a parang knife nor swear at me when they see me with it.

Hi Killer_jay
Luckily I am not doctor/CEO/CFO/COO - if not, this trip might not happen :)
Unfortunately, neither am I reporter, journalist nor lawyer but just an easy going sales person , blessed with the gift of the gab!

Thanks for checking out the thread and hope you'll hang around!
Cheers!

#2 Burkina Faso - Ouaguadougou, Whats in the marketplace?
One will find anything, everything in the african market.
This... I had to take a double look to make sure it is what is it? I "asked" (with hand signs) if it is for eating, they nodded gleefully.. I'd like to think they are pulling my leg, all because they want to see my astonished expression!

So Timbuktu is in Mali. Do you happens to know what is this structure that has sticks sticking out from it for? I have seen others somewhere else that has a lot of holes and always wonders what the sticks and holes are for.
