Yeah i suppose so. The wheel part really does take some getting used to.

Apart from using it to scroll through photos taken, the control dial (wheel) is also useful when it comes to changing settings for P, Tv, Av, M and C modes. I am beginning to like it more.

From what I understand, P mode will auto set the aperture, shutter speed and the correct exposure to take a picture. Whereas M mode is fully manual function for you to set the aperture and shutter speed to your own preferences. When I tried using the manual mode to manual set the aperture and shutter, somehow the exposure level at the corner will prompt me that it is either over or under expose and it is only when I set it to the same settings as what the camera auto set for me in P mode then the exposure level will prompt that it is a correct exposure.

Does the exposure level really matter when it comes to shooting in manual mode? Do you always have to so call "obey" what the exposure level prompts you when taking the picture in manual mode? If I would to obey the exposure level eventually I would get the same image quality as what I took in the P mode.

The SX10 is still targetted at the consumer market, albeit at the higher end. This group of users want something that is easy to use (read automatic) yet able to let you have manual controls. For M mode, the camera is just suggesting to you what it thinks should be the correct setting. This is useful to many of us who may be less knowledgeable. However, if you feel that you want to shoot at a particular setting, go ahead. I don't think the camera will stop you.

Lensmate plans to make an adapter that will fit into the bayonet mount that the hood goes into. This will allow you to add filters to the end of the lens. You will not be able to mount anything heavier though, as the weight might damage the lens mechanism, since the adapter is directly connected to the lens. For other camera models, the adapter connects to the camera body. I fell this also helps protect the lens. It would be a 52mm adapter.

Update on Lensmate website:

SX10 IS and SX1 IS Filter holder
(available end of Oct. approx.)

The Lensmate filter holder for the SX10 IS and SX1 will allow the attachment of a 52mm filter and the OEM hood at the same time, as well as allowing the hood to be stored backwards on the lens with the filter in place.

The OEM lens caps can be used on the filter as well. Filter holder also works with Raynox DCR-250 Macro lens.

Have been trying out with my new SX10IS playing around with the manual settings etc and I come to realise that I can always never achieve that kind of shot whereby the object you are focusing is sharp while the rest of the background is blur to create emphasize on the main subject. Tried it with the biggest aperture size of f2.8 but yet still give me the shoot where everything tend to be sharp....Is there anything that i may miss out in the settings??:(

coz yours is a small sensor.. to create bokah shots, try to zoom to max, then focus on the object in front, the background should be as far back as possible.. it will create a limited bokah shot.... else shoot in macro mode loh :bsmilie:

aiya, its not a PnS for nothing.. i have given up on proconsumer and pns :bsmilie:

Thanks for the advise...So disappointing I thought can create that kind of effect...So any other effect which cannot be done using the SX10? How about take waterfall shot? can SX10 create that kinda smooth flowing water effect? or capturing fast action pictures like taking a shot of an object dropping into water with the water ripples and the splashes being capture??

I don't know the answer to your specific questions. But why don't you consider what your camera can do rather than what your camera cannot do? Many times, it is not the camera but the man behind the camera.

In the hands of the right cameraman, the PowerShot S series cameras, of which the SX10 is the latest, can give you very good shots. See what others have done:

Have to agree with this.

These were shot with a S2IS. The sensor is smaller, if I am not mistaken, gives more DoF then the SX10IS.

Go to photo hosting sites (eg Flickr) and search of S2/3/5 IS. You will find many good photos taken with these cameras. Most of the stuff you asked has been photographed by these cameras. Do a google search for such things, you will find many sites that can help you. You can also post photos here, with all the settings that you use if you want help from people.

The important thing for you to do is go out and use your camera, experiment with it. You are not firing off a roll of film, so you should not worry.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the info...i will tried to read up some of the posts given and do some try out with the camera and will post it here from some comments...:D

AF seems to be quite fast, unlike the Oly SP570

Ahh...something new i've learnt.

Hi tks.. Seems like you have been using Canon prosumer for quite a while. I'm a newbie here. Would like to know have you tried other prosumer before.
A sales person in a general photo shop telling me Nikon prosumer / compact is not good.

Thinking of buying a SX10IS, but also wonder is Nikon p80 or fuji S2000HD comparable... Thanks

Yes, I have been using the S series cameras from S1 to S5, and now SX10. I have not tried the other brands. I think each camera will have its own strengths and weaknesses.

I always end up with the Canon because I have happy with it. I know its quirks and what it can or cannot do for me.

How do you guys take macro shots without using any converter? I always face the same problem, even with S3 or S5. Let's say I want to take a bee on a flower. I stand some distance away and zoom in. It's very clear and focused. But the moment I press the shutter (half-way), the image goes out of focus. If I proceed to take the picture, invariably it will show that the focus is on something else, maybe the leaves in the background.

I have to try many times. Often, I have to go real close to the subject matter. Anyway, here's my first macro attempt using SX10. It obviously cannot be compared with those taken by you guys in the S1/2/3/5 thread.

Try to take photos of a ruler and see what magnification can your camera achieve.

For those checking SX10 price, my friend just told me she went to Funan and was quoted between $695 to $705 for the camera. Standard 8GB HCSD free. Some shops throw in a free camera bag.

Being a S5IS owner, I can say that the High ISO noise performance is definitely better that the S5 IS. I reckon it useful up to ISO 400 for good quality and up to ISO 800 for acceptable. Then again, these are made based on the small pictures taken here.

Anyways thanks for posting up the images. Ever since the SX10 and SX1 was announce... it makes me drool...

Btw, the SX1 is quoted at AUD 819 and at the current exchange rate. Its about the same as SGD.

Is this for real? A$819 is a very good price for the SX1. I had expected something above $1k. I am going Australia beginning Dec, so if this is true, my goodness. I may be starting a My PowerShot SX1 thread soon. I surely hope not.

 SX1IS launched liao meh? if yes, why only that "shop" selling?

In other place SX1IS will be launch in mid of NOV 08... But Singapore will be launch in mid to end of Jan 09 due to some production delay.

This info I got it from Canon Singapore by sending e-mail to them.
