My PowerShot SX10 IS (S5 replacement)

A big consideration for this SX10 and SX1 is that the tele end is a rather dim F5.7, while other super zooms like panasonic/olympus/nikon/casio/fujifilm all have a brighter F4.5 tele end. :dunno:

I used the camera a fair bit today. So I can report some things today.

From what I have read, there seems to be no easy way of attaching an adapter to which you can mount converters. This means that you cannot use tele or wide angle converters on the new SX10IS & SX1IS.

The lens hood mount (groove) is "L" shaped. Insert and turn clockwise 90 degrees to click into place. I don't suppose this is called a thread. When not in use, you invert the hood and mount it on the lens facing the camera body. In view of the 28 to 560 mm focal length, Canon probably thinks you don't need tele or wide angle converters.

Was thinking the image quality of SX1 and SX10 will be similar except SX1 has a faster shooting rate..

The jury is still out on this one, until we actually have the SX1 sometime early next year. But I believe most people will think the SX1 with CMOS sensor should turn out better images. It will be hard to justify a much higher price if the image quality is the same.[/I]

Some buttons also have been re-arranged but there's one part i don't like abt it and it's the scroll wheel behind. Somehow i find that it's not very responsive.

Yes, the Control Dial (what you call scroll wheel) is difficult to control. I much prefer the simple left/right button for precise action.

If the SX1 IS were to be the same as this, then it's going to be a bit of a problem.

If the SX1 IS were to be the same as this, then it's going to be a bit of a problem.

I believe the SX1 is supposed to be identical to the SX10 except for:-

- CMOS sensor
- 4fps continuous shooting
- Full HD movie with HDMI output
- slightly bigger 2.8" LCD
- Lower resolution EVF

As for the control dial, it may be a question of practice makes perfect. I now find it quite useful in scrolling through photos taken. Selection of scene modes is still a bit tricky but I am getting better at it.

How do you guys take macro shots without using any converter? I always face the same problem, even with S3 or S5. Let's say I want to take a bee on a flower. I stand some distance away and zoom in. It's very clear and focused. But the moment I press the shutter (half-way), the image goes out of focus. If I proceed to take the picture, invariably it will show that the focus is on something else, maybe the leaves in the background.

I have to try many times. Often, I have to go real close to the subject matter. Anyway, here's my first macro attempt using SX10. It obviously cannot be compared with those taken by you guys in the S1/2/3/5 thread.

Can I ask how is the low light performance at diff ISO levels?

I am not knowlegeable enough to answer your question. So I took some photos for you to look. Everything is taken handheld in P mode at ISO 200, 400, 800 and 1600. Last photo I choose the ISO 3200 in scene mode but somehow the resolution automatically dropped to 1600x1200.

This picture I took in Auto mode. The camera selected ISO 200. I think the "Raise the flash" warning came on but I ignored it.

Yeah i suppose so. The wheel part really does take some getting used to.

reali thanks for ur efforts... from ur pics, I deduce the camera performance still swee at ISO 800(for me) but at ISO 1600 n above, noise are pretty jialiat. I did read from a website preview(cant rem which 1) SX10 n SX1's pic quality r similar.. will b disappointed if the cmos sensor is only faster and nothing more. :p

well, can conclude noise is definitely better den S5is ;)

and ur macro looks sharp

How do you guys get those "macro bee" pictures? I can't move the lens closer to the bee or it will fly away. I can zoom it to the bee from some distance and get it in focus. But the moment I press the shutter to get a focus lock, I will invariably lose the focus. It is a problem I have always encountered, even with S3 and S5.

For those of you willing to take a risk, you can get a brand new SX10 for about under S$600.

The list price of SX10 in the US is only US$399 but many shops are selling for as low as US$360. You can buy online at www.amazon.com here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001G5ZTZO/ref=dp_olp_1

Many of these shops offer free shipping to US address. So you need to sign up for a free vpost USA address at www.vpostusa.com.sg

Once vpostUSA receives your purchase, Singpost will ship it back to Singapore. I measured the camera box and calculated vpostUSA charges to be around S$20.

As the purchase plus freight exceeds S$400, you need to pay 7% GST.

Camera S$540 (converted from US$ at 1.5 but rate keeps going up)
vpostUSA charges S$20
GST S$39.20

Total cost: S$599.20.

Of course, you don't get your free 8GB card (seems like Amazon.com gives you free 4GB) and most importantly, you don't get your local warranty.

Anyone want to try it and let us know??

what is the file size of the video 640x480 at 30fps for a 2 min clip.

for the SX1 IS, wonder what will be the file size at 1920x1080 for 2 min clip.

what is the file size of the video 640x480 at 30fps for a 2 min clip.

The file size is not fixed but depends on the images and sound captured. On my S5, a 1 min clip at 30fps normally takes up just under 120MB. On the SX10, an equivalent 1 min clip is taking up just under 80MB. Not quite the 60% reduction claimed.

thanks for the info.

I just got my SX10IS 3 days ago, in fact it is my first time using a semi pro camera, therefore would like to clear out some doubts between the P mode and the M mode of the camera.

From what I understand, P mode will auto set the aperture, shutter speed and the correct exposure to take a picture. Whereas M mode is fully manual function for you to set the aperture and shutter speed to your own preferences. When I tried using the manual mode to manual set the aperture and shutter, somehow the exposure level at the corner will prompt me that it is either over or under expose and it is only when I set it to the same settings as what the camera auto set for me in P mode then the exposure level will prompt that it is a correct exposure.

Does the exposure level really matter when it comes to shooting in manual mode? Do you always have to so call "obey" what the exposure level prompts you when taking the picture in manual mode? If I would to obey the exposure level eventually I would get the same image quality as what I took in the P mode.

Anyone can advise on this...Sorry it may be stupid questions to ask but I am still learning...:)

How far are you standing away from the bee?

Do note that focusing range for macro mode is 10cm to 50cm. This might be the problem. Correct me if I am wrong .

Did you try not using macro mode?

Camera is normally about 30 to 50 cm away from the flower. I try without or without macro. Same problem of losing focus when I press the shutter. Just before I press the shutter, the flower is in focus.

I would like to reiterate that I get this problem even with my previous S3 and S5. A friend who has the S3 also complained to me of the same problem. When I disabled "continuous focusing", I thought I had the problem solved but I think not.

How about standing further away (much more than 50cm), and not using macro mode?

I'm currently a S5 user and try this on model shooting, and is quite focused. But not sure if it applies to bees & flower shooting.
