Did you mount the camera on a tripod for the firework or are you hand holding it?either i failed my camera or it failed me just now at NE show. i changed to fireworks mode. the shutter speed was duper slow. how?? i did not get one good shot
Most likely you have failed your camera...

yesh i think so too haha. i almost threw my cam into the Singapore river tho. ohmy. i was handholding. hmm but that means we suppose to anticipate and press shutter before actual explosion of fireworks?
haha so many other photographers also dont use tripod i saw due to the rain.

Since this camera does not have bulb mode, you have to press the shutter before the burst. Watch the streak of the explosive going up, press the shutter when you estimate it is about to blow. This is not easy to do though.
Best is if you have a tripod. Set camera to two second self timer, then press shutter. It is quite easy once you get used to it.
Here are two examples (Full manual mode, f5.0, 2 seconds, with tripod):

This is where a big umbrella is really useful. Unless it is a torrential downpour. Most decent tripods can withstand their legs getting wet.
Actually the bigger worry shooting where I was was salt spray. Next time you are at the beach and the wind is blowing onto the shore, take a look at you lens at the end of the day.

There's no way u're going to get gd shots of fireworks handholding. If not, why are pple using tripods?
I just got myself a S5 IS on sat. its a wonderful camera till now i would say. Under good lighting, it showed terrific sharpness in pictures. but i seems to have problem taking photos at night. the noise is very high, as i am a real noob in photography, anyone can help me? thanks.

omg i failed the camera once more. i cant take jumpshots. which setting should i use. taken during twilight not sufficient light i guess. too much noise.
boon8623- come share your pics then we can nitpick on ways to improve perhaps?
do take a look on the S5 users photo blogs,flicks and all and be inspired okay since we are all striving on same systems afterall.

is it just me or did anyone else experience some kinda lag on shutter release. like sometime i face this problem where i need to press the shutter hard for quite some time (6 to 7 seconds) then by luck the shutter can be released. usually, theres this hand icon blinking on my LCD. hmmss
I own a Raynox DCR 1540 mounted on Raynox 52mm adapter to my S5. I realised that I have to zoom all the way to avoid vignetting thus I have seldom used it since I bought it a few months ago : ( Can I ask whether this is the same when using Canon adapter, telephoto and Wide angle lens?
Were the in-built flash raised? When its raised, it will recharge itself and you can't take picture until the the flash is sufficiently charged. With weak batteries, it may take as long as 6 seconds to recharge.

The tele converter is meant for use at the long end of the lens. Just like the wide converter is meant to be used at the wide end of the lens.
It is normally to get vignetting with almost any tele converter. Put it on when you need the extra reach. Else keep it in the bag. You are not supposed to keep it on all the time, unless you shoot at 500 mm or more all the time. The only way to have a tele converter that does not vignette is to have much more glass in it, this would push up the cost greatly.
Same as the wide converter. The image quality will drastically drop if you start to zoom your lens.

If you are shooting landscapes or water, get a polariser. Waterfalls, ND would be useful. Search the buy/sell threads, there are some mass orders for this stuff. Or just head down to the bigger camera shops.
Make sure you do not regret buying too cheap a tripod.
i suddenly have an outburst of contemplation to get a DSLR and sell off my S5IS
i dont know man i feel that if i buy all these stuff, can it be reused if in the near future i
upgrade to dslr
How much are you willing to spend on a dSLR? I calculated that if I want a complete package from Canon, it would be something close to $10k. :sweat: This is assuming I get all the fast lenses and the better bodies. This would cover the focal length of my S3IS and the macro capabilities. I would kill my back carrying all of that though.
If you get 58mm filters, they can be used on some lenses. Or you can get bigger sized filters and get a step down ring for your S5IS.
A good tripod + head (support from 3-5kg) can also be used with most dSLR setups.
If you have a proper flash with your S5IS, you can use that with a dSLR (TTL exposure support and all depends on the type of flash)
