anyone have any idea whats the best settings to shoot potraits of people's face against a white background?

Thanks velasco. I must say that your shots are simply National Geographic quality... really. If there is every a chance, I would love to meet up with you when you go on one of your shoots and I wanna see how you can do it and learn from there!

hmmm... I thot I read that he was using a S5. And that's why it's all the more amazing. Velasco's work might put quite a few DSLR owners to shame.... like...myself. :P

Depends on what effect u want to achieve. For portraits, i would prefer to use prime lenses on a DSLR as i can really play around with the DOF. The S5 IS can also do that but pretty much limited. I would use a large aperture to take my portraits though.

its the blur you can distinctly notice on pictures behind the subject. thats how i like to intepret it even theres more definitive meaning hehe

thank you luffs! i'll take that :D

hey there velasco.. tks for the explanation. I learn something new again..

Just wondering if anyone knows, since S5 is almost a yr old, is the new follow-up model going to be out anytime soon? The reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking of getting S5 but may want to wait for the new one if it's going to be launched.

Thank you!

But so far there's no news on its successor. How long u want to wait is very unpredictable.

may i know how much is a brand new S5IS now? Thanks ;)

So far no news about a S6IS. However, if there is indeed an upcoming S6IS, the release history of the PowerShot S series will indicate the launch should not be too far away.

S1IS (3.2mp) Feb 9th 2004
S2IS (5.0mp) Apr 22th 2005
S3IS (6.0mp) Feb 21st 2006
S5IS (8.0mp) May 7th 2007
S6IS (10.0mp?) ???????????

By this year-end should have the S5 IS's successor.

i tink S5is is definitely a better choice over than nikon p80... despite the age, the technology employed in S5 (which is nt very old 8mp, DIGIC III etc), S5 should triumph over P80 ;)

well that's wat i heard folks sayin nearing the end of last year!;)

Impossible to be end of last year as the S5 IS was only launched around June last year too. So by this year should have a successor. If features upgrades are significant, i'll upgrade my S5 IS.

Hi all,

Pretty noob on this cam though bn having S5 for a while but haven't really spent much time on it. I find when set at P (auto), indoor shots are mostly over-exposed (the shutter speed is usually half/1 stop slower thn S3). Anyone has the same problem?

I have the original canon adapter (+CPL filter as permanent setup) & a wide angle lense. The DC58A has very substantial amount of barrel distortion so try avoid having straight lines near the borders to make it less obvious. When using the built-in flash with the DC58A up, there is shadow and is more obvious in darker environment. An external flash is a must to solve the issue (me using 430ex). A few points to share with fella users :)

Cheers & happy shooting...:)

Dear all,

Newbie here.
Can I ask,
is there really an obvious difference between Hoya, B+W filters as compared to other cheaper one.

I got myself a vitacon (i think) CPL.
But I feel like not much difference with and w/o the filter.
is it my skill, or the filter, or the brand.
haiz, pls advise.

Another question.
Is there a difference btw HOYA 58mm HMC Ultra-Violet UV Filter and HOYA 58mm Super S-HMC Ultra-Violet UV Filter
Which should i get.

Hoya HMC UV $25 is for which UV filter?

Many Thanks.

see the difference. no tripod use, just handheld. no flash, so difficult to get correct pix quality.

I've not used other brands of filters but previously was using Hoya before upgrading to B+W. There is a difference between the HMC/SHMC/Pro 1 Digital UV as compared to the B+W MRC UV Haze. The contrasts were slightly better, glass is much easier to clean and has a brass rim as compared to aluminium rims on the Hoya.

my bday is coming and my parents asked me my wishlist so i thought.oh wells,
anyone have any recommendations on any supporting equipments( lens, filters etc)
that can be worth the money spent. anything below 100bucks and at the same time, can enhance my photo quality.

oh yes, for my canon powershot S5 IS

Thanks for all the info. I think I will wait for the successor then.
