My PowerShot S5 IS

If you were to take advantage of the superb video capability of the S5, I would suggest to bring along at least a 4GB card.

For group travel, don't think you have much time to set out the tripot. A mini one may be good for occasional shot.

Hi Raymondb, thank you very much for the input.. yeah it didn't occur to me that I wun have enuff time to erect the tripod. But I do have abt 1.5 days F&E nearing the end of the tour. If i do not bring along my tripod, i may not be able to capture nite shots of Shanghai.. (e.g. slower shutter speed etc)

Now i'm really contemplating to see if I would wanna bring along my tripod or juz make do with the mini-tripod.. If i do bring my tripod, i would be able to capture a few / some nite shots, if i bring my mini-tripod instead, i might not get a chance to capture those sceneries. Sheesh.. Dilemma!!

Wad would u do if u were in my shoes Raymondb? Would u bring along ur main tripod + mini-tripod?

I noe that settings are very subjective with regards to wad an individual wants to snap. But roughly, wad kinda settings do u guys have on ur S5 when on the trip.. i.e. snapping impromptu pics from the bus, quick snaps etc.

Sorry if the qns sounds very vague but I really have very limited knowlege when it comes to the usage of terms in photography.. pls pardon me.

Thanks.

When u are in the bus and wanna take fast snaps while the bus in moving, the best settings for me is the "sports" mode and "continuous shots". Pix will be grainy due have high ISO and fast shutter speed but its good enuff if its on a bright day.

I dun usually bring a tripod when I travel, i find its such a hassle. But there's no stopping you tho. Its just me. Of course my night shots will be affected. Its all depends wat u wanna shoot actually. By all means bring a tripod if u want. ;)

If you have plan to take night shots and knowing that you will have sufficient time for it, then you should go for it, but I think you would have to schedule your time in such a way that you have time to go back to the hotel to retrieve the tripot for the night shots. Don't think you would want to lug along the tripot whole day (Assuming it is a large one). One thing I would suggest before taking long exposure shot, is to switch off the image stability function, and switch it back on after the shooting.

Guys, I truely thank ya'll for the inputs & suggestions.. I've been tinking & i concur that it'll be a hassle to bring along a tripod (mine's rather large)

Tks prodigic for the advise on the sports mode setting.. I'll bear that in mind when snapping pics while moving.

Raymondb, tks for the advise with regards to the on/off of the IS when taking a long exposure shot.

After considering all aspects, I will conclude that I'll just bring with me a mini-tripod. :D

Thanks all again!!

 kind of difficult, unless macro mode is on but its not feasible since u gonna take protrait photos

For compact cameras, unless your camera is very near, very difficult to achieve bokeh. Unless head shots only, but even then, your background needs to be very far away.

anyone here heard of this macro + wide angle lens ? Brand of the box says GroBactiG 58mm 0.45 mm made in Germany. Friend said can take gd pics. Sure or not ? Can I buy ? Is put this still need to buy cp lens ? Thanks !

I have one of this kind of lens, but of different brand. Quality is not too good, but its super cheap! How much is the GroBactiG you mentioned here?

Did you try stepping back and zoom in, longer zoom will give you a more blur background, assuming the background is not too near to the subject.

Heard from my friend is less than $200 for both lens... wondering whether should I buy or not.... she said the pic turn out to be gd !! She will show me pics tmr .. She is using S3.

I got myself a Digital King WA + macro, 58mm 0.45x made in Japan. Its a super cheap lens but it does its job..

Picture quality may sometimes be compromised but on the whole, its a value buy for someone like me who doesn't know nuts about photography but wanna try it and hopefully it'll be my hobby (will only upgrade to dslr after mastering S5).

Just my 0.002 cents - Good pics are sometimes very subjective because one man's meat is always another man's poison.. so if you tested it and found it to meet your expectation, den by all means get it because ultimately, u'll be the one shooting the pictures with your own style.

I'm sorry for this newbie qns but wad is the meaning of the term 'Bokeh'
