I always believe pictures tell a thousand words.

Pic 1 and 2 are taken at ard 0100hrs (040208). Pic no. 1 is the blurred shot. Pic no. 2 was taken immediately after that. All shots are taken with a canon mini tripod and all settings for both pics are similar. ISO 80, 8"/f3.2

Pic 1.

Pic 2.

Note tat these 2 pics are exactly identical. Only tat 1 of which is blur.

I took a couple of shots to test the camera at night and found it quite hard to get some pics to come out clear even after i took the shots many times with a mini tripod. Take for example this;

No matter wad setting i tried.. I still couldn't get the optimum results.. was rather disappointed.

Try switching off the IS when tripod is used, especially for long exposure shot. For a 8" shot, its a very long duration. You may like to try with a more steady tripod instead of a minipod.

Improving quality not possible as u're just adding more glass to deteriorate the quality. I'm using the wide conversion lens and CA is still quite bad at the tele end.

Hi there,

I've too have the same blurry pics like yours when using the mini canon tripod taking

night photo..

I think your blurry pics is mainly due to the mini tripod that you using..

Anyway below are some of my noob night shot with S5 and a decent tripod

Yup, you are somewhere there, anyway wide angle lens is not necessarily for landscape only.

It is also good for group photos where space is limited to move around.

Whereas telephoto zoom lens can be use for wildlife, birds, closed up portraiture etc etc.

thanx.
then telescope sounds to be wat i wan...
can move closer without disturbin the subject.

I'm still a newbie as i speak and below link is a good example of a landscape photographer that involved in photography not long but produces stunning jaw dropping photos

His work has brought inspiration to me to learn and explore more about nature (landscape etc) photography.

P/S : take a look at the equipment that he's using. That also trigger me that equipment doesn't promised good result but it's the man behind the equipment.

A good tripod is worth the money. Try not to get those super light ones, with additional supports between the legs. You need something that is stable, not something that flexes everytime you press the shutter. Also, the better tripods will last a long time. Mine has rolled down a hill, dropped etc a few times.

Another thing you should do is set it to two second timer. This will prevent any shake after pressing the shutter.

Hi,

I also just got my 1st cam which is S5IS. On tripod, any recommendation for this camera which steady but will not burn a whole on my pocket.

Rgd.

U need a tripod? I recommend the Slik Sprint Pro GM (comes with a ball head) and extends quite high with individual leg extensions just like the more expensive models. Price only around $80+.

Gitzo has some nice ones, starting around $600

One question. Do you plan to get a heavier camera down the road? If you do not, Slik Sprint Pro GM as mentioned by Snoweagle should be more then enough.

Ermm...he said that will not burn a hole in his pocket.

I bought a tripod tat morning after i took those shots. Paid abt $50 for it (mine's the tripod with individual leg extension)

Hehe.. with regards to the setting of the timer, tat's wad i have been doing even since i tried the nite shots. Like u say, it definitely prevents shakes from hitting the shutter!

Never know, might have flame retardant pockets! :bsmilie:

Okay, I am being evil....

Oooo, forgot to add, that is the price without the head!

Thanks for all comments...

Gitzo have great tripods but maybe alittle too much for time being. Yes, i wanted to get 2nd hand dslr but think of BBB will kill me and my limited budget too.(Even with S5IS i can think of so many things to buy)
For time being maybe will get something which can hold my S5IS and a light DSLR setup (eg. with lens kit). Maybe 1-2 year down the road, i should own my 1st DSLR.
