My PowerShot S5 IS

I hate to disappoint you, snoweagle, but the S5 is generally regarded as more of a compact camera than a prosumer, although I would very much like to think of it as a prosumer camera.

I've to disappoint u too tks, the truth is the S5 is a prosumer cam.

I am actually not disappointed. In fact, I will be elated if most people regard the S5 as a prosumer camera. As you know, I own a S5. When newbies ask me about my camera, I always refer to it as a prosumer model as it immediately conveys the message that the camera is somewhere in between a simple consumer model and a complicated professional model. But I think we are in the minority.

There is no universally agreed definition of what constitutes a prosumer camera. Some people (like you, me and some people in CS) feel the S5 is a prosumer model. Others do not think so. What I am saying is that the majority of people who are apparently more knowledgeable do not regard the Canon Sx series as prosumer models. Only the Canon G series qualify as prosumer models. Even then, some people think the G series are still not prosumer models. They refer only to the entry level Canon dSLRs as prosumer models. If you look at reviews in reputed websites such as dpreview, you will see them referring to the Sx series as compact cameras, or ultra-zoom compacts to be more precise. The prosumer label is used for some other cameras.

Perhaps, we should call the S5 a prosumer compact?

The Canon S5 is probably the least compact of the so-called compact cameras. If you are looking for a compact camera that is really compact, the S5 is probably not the camera.

The Sony H3 looks promising in this aspect. But I am firm believer in not buying cameras that uses only Memory Sticks and proprietary batteries.

ya u r right bout the memory stick. i kinda prefer sd cards, but now i'm struggling not much on what cards the cam used but which cam. really, i would prefer to stay with powershot models but the neww systme iA in Sony is really tempting.

A compact and prosumer are totally different things altogether. Then why do u justify the G series as prosumers but not the SX IS series? Is it becos of it being higher-end than the S series? In fact, i found the S5's functions better than that of the G9 other than it lacking RAW. By the way i also own n S5 and it definitely places itself as a prosumer and nothing of a compact like the IXUS and A series.

Dear snoweagle,

You seem to completely miss the point that I am in agreement with you that the S5 should righfully be considered a prosumer camera. What I simply tried to do was to point out that many people apparently do not agree with this. For example, just look at the reviews of the S5 on www.dpreview.com. You will see that dpreview considers the S5 a compact camera. The Ixus and similar range are classified as ultra compacts. The review of the EOS 40D considers this camera a prosumer camera.

I never trusted reviews as i always believed in trying out myself as different people have different concepts and findings so they're not accurate. The 40D is a prosumer DSLR. Yes the S5 may be a compact in size as compared to DSLRs but what i'm referring to its the class its in and the S5 falls in the prosumer range. That's what i'm trying to imply. Many other people may not agree with u too, it's just the perception.

As i've said, different people have different concepts.

so wats the price like for this camera now ?

It retails for around $720. Why do you keep asking about new cameras when you already have a good one in your hands?

I alr sold mine . And there is nothing wrong just asking ard and looking at cameras right ?

hey thanks .. looks like a good price :)

No there is nothing wrong. Just that it's rather alarming to see you buying then selling then looking for a new camera again.

I just got my S5 from MS Color. Same, $630 :)

S5 now $699 from Canon. Seems like a deal, maybe i'll buy the S5 after all.
do u guys know what the difference between the Canon Kit bag and the Cleaning kit?
Canon now giving the kit bag as a freebie and i wanna know what it contains.

Gd price but there're cheaper options outside. The cleaning kit is included inside the bag, together with a table-top mini tripod and blower.

Standard freebies (2GB SD card plus standard kits) self collect at Canon, Harbourfront.

Hmm...all I can say the flash is like a normal compact cam's flash. I guess taking photos in low light condition or taking indoor portraits, having external flash should be much better. Correct me if I'm wrong.

u mean there wasn't any added freebies from MS itself? just wondering whether
to buy from other stores cause the price is higher but they give more stuff like a tripod and
1more sd card plus the one from Canon.
