My PowerShot S5 IS

If you ask me..I would say S5 is not good for nightshotting that need ISO higher than 400..
RAW is more for pro user..
I always downloading my pic with USB cable provide by S5 via their solfware...very easy..XP will detect it...pop out a window...you click "start download" then down.....done..then a EX brower will pop out to let you see the latest pics...that really easy..

good point MIC i wonder whether got any powershot lower than S5 THAT IS MADE IN JAP.

i was just reading a review bout the S5 and they always conplain about a loose cap that falls off easily as well as
that it is without a RAW system ( can someone explain what is that).
another thing is they say that downloading pics into the com from the S5 is inconvenient bacause it needs a special 'something.'
i'm quite lowsy with this kind of stuff so can some S5 users explain and give tips. i really wanna buy a cam that would be 'worth the money'

I disagree. Any dedicated camera can be set to ISO 100 and left on a tripod to expose for the shot at night can produce stunning results.

As for the RAW part, anyone can shoot RAW (if available) and convert it using the appropriate software.

Of course, there are little things about the S5 that some of us, including myself, do not like. But that is the same for any camera. There is no such thing as a perfect camera. The S5 is supposed to be quite good (relative to other non-SLR Canon models) in low light. There may be other makes (e.g Fuji) that perform much better in low light but they will lack in some features which the S5 has.

As for RAW mode, the S5, like most non-SLR cameras, do not have it. But if you don't know what it is, then you don't need it.

actually they are creating a sort of addon tweak to enable the raw for S5.
Currently the tweak "so called hack" only works for S3 it does gives you more details when shooting in raw.

i gotta cam now that is superbly lowsy in taking indoor shots when the light is dim or not extremely bright. will i have that problem with the S5? SEE FOR M,Y CAM NOW IT JUST DARKENS THE WHOLE PICTURE WHEN I TAKE WITH FLASH, THAN IT IS BLUR WITHOUT FALSH.
i had a powershot (lower model) last time and it was ok when taking indoor with flash, so i'm hoping to have that with the S5 since the other powershot(as far as i know) are made in China, S5 seems like the only solution.

something to note.

the price if i am not wrong was before the gst hike. now price should be higher.

regarding Night Shooting

No PNS is good for it. if you are thinking about uping the ISO.
S5IS + decent Tripod would be good enough for most night shoots.
if can not use tripod, then use flash or live with the noisy High ISO pic.

S5IS is a strong all round for ppl starting and for ppl who are lazy to carry DSLRs during some events.

i would advice for ppl starting and getting the S5IS is to first know the limits of S5IS and learn to work with them, it would benefit them in the long run.

flash was not strong enough and you were mostly using M mode.

Untrue. By adding a tele-converter, u'll lose out on wide end.

That was a few mths ago Canon promotion. Not sure whether now still have. I bought mine at MS Color just before GST rised to 7%. But i heard now still $710 at current GST rate, or maybe slightly lower.

By cams like these, similar to a compact model, usually only have a very tiny sensor no larger than 10mm in size. Unless Canon decides to add in larger CCDs or CMOS in future.

Bro i suggest u do some reading up on basic photography first.........if not shots taken with the S5 would be the same like the cam u r having now or every other cam........The S5 gives u lots of manual control.....but all these would be useless unless u do ur homework on basic photography. If u think u r too lazy to do so, i think u can forget about buying the S5 or any other cams(don waste ur money).....cause the end results will be the same.....u will still get lousy shots (even if i give u a canon 5D):bsmilie:. Just my two cents worth.........

I am also a newbie using a S5. I don get dark back grounds even i am using a flash.....

For pictures that has a dark background and a bright foreground (bright faces), you can try the slow sync flash with a tripod in S5 IS. If the whole pictures is not bright enough becos the objects are too far and the built-in flash is too weak, then for S5 you have the external flash option with the built-in hot shoe.

The Canon S5 is probably the least compact of the so-called compact cameras. If you are looking for a compact camera that is really compact, the S5 is probably not the camera.

The Sony H3 looks promising in this aspect. But I am firm believer in not buying cameras that uses only Memory Sticks and proprietary batteries.

The S5 is not really regarded as a compact but more of a prosumer. If really want compact, then get those slim pocket cameras.

I hate to disappoint you, snoweagle, but the S5 is generally regarded as more of a compact camera than a prosumer, although I would very much like to think of it as a prosumer camera.
