To stop further damaging the hardisk... think u better sent ur hardisk for data recovery services... same situation when my ext. hardisk crushed on me :(

Oic, then you have to try megaweb's suggestion liao....hopefully your motherboard can take in your portable HDD (IDE/SATA)...:)

Dun think I know how to do that ehhhh

TS might want to be careful not to overwrite stuff onto the HD when trying out various methods to revive the HD. If he has a messed up FAT table, chances are any write action will overwrite onto the precious data (photos) that are stored in the HD. Get professional help if the data is that important. IMHO, no amount of money is worth the lost image of your love ones.

Should I bring it back to Challenger (as I believe it should be under warranty ) first or bring to the professional to retrive my data first?

I don't think warranty will gurantee you retrieval of data. In my opinion, better to get the data out before you claim warranty...

Backup your image every quarterly to DVD (2 copies each), HDD these days not so reliable, not surprise to change HDD once every 2-3 years.

PM me I can help with advise.

i have the same problem with a maxtor mini HDD
now i don't know what to do
so i should send in for data recovery?

Contact Maxtor.
Of all people, they would know best on how to recover the data.

one thing bout maxtor,
is that they will replace the whole HDD without a doubt.
they will not get back the documents from the old HDD

what matters is the documents in the HDD to me :(
not the HDD, being so cheap nowadays too.

It's unlikely that this applies to anything reasonably modern, but in the past Maxtor external USB harddisks did not implement the USB2.0 storage class standard correctly, resulting in operating system hangs etc. Installing the device-specific driver from Maxtor should work around this.

Data recovery is not cheap....it will be in thousands of dollars. Always backup, backup and more backup.

Not necessarily, I went to my trusted recovery company and only paid S$600-700 to recover 120GB worth of data. I later sent in a 1.8" HDD (which is hard to recover because not all companies have tools to read these tdrives) and it also cost that amount.

Of course, you go to those big companies, then prepare to pay a few thousand to ten thousand dollars (over inflated charges).

Is your hard disk Seagate or Maxtor? I brought mine to Data Savers www.datasavers.com.sg and was able to do exchange for new disk still. Heard their pricing lowest then I went to them. Think they also have some partnership with Seagate Recovery Services.

How much did you have to pay for Datasavers.com?
