Perhaps it was because I was brown? Does that make a big difference to the service I am offered?
Yup good point about the lens, my mistake. However offering the old one they had at $3300, they probably had an inkling of what I was really after.

Oh well what's done is done. No harm, no foul. I am content with the lesson learnt here :)

Never mind if you had made a mistake - I would think that the job of a sales person is to offer to the client the product knowledge of the brand e.g. information, clarification, etc. which is why there is a difference between a salesperson and a cashier.

I think you ought to have received a better customer experience as they are different from most of the other shops as Nikon SG refers them as a WHOLESALER.

I think this is scary trend - I might need to know how a turbo engine looks like when I purchase my next car !

Yes, u better do your homework when chimes to buying a car.

Many models have subtle differences from older models.

A camera is relatively cheap compared to a car. Wrong purchase of a car is a lifetime debt. Camera cost is chicken feet

TK photo hires horrible sales staff.. I've had tons of bad encounters with them. In fact, honestly the whole electronics scene in Singapore is bad. You really need to arm yourself with as much knowledge/photos/spec-sheets/price lists as possible before buying anything from any dealer here.

I deal with two sales staff ONLY in Singapore for my camera needs (from two separate stores). If those fellows aren't working on a particular day, I won't even bother going shopping for gear.

I suggest you do the same... You'll even end up getting better prices that way.

I have not bought anything from tkfoto for quite a while. The last time was probably a year ago, when i was looking for a macro lens.

Sales person was trying to persuade me to buy an old version, stating that there's no newer version. Told them the model number and that the new version comes with Optical Stability, so the sales person suan me... "You ever taken macro shots or not? Who need OS for macro shots".

End up buying from SLR Revo upstairs.

To be fair, i have dealt with one older sales staff. He is ok. Cant remember his name though. Only 1 in tkfoto that is fine.

Well... I have very good service with TKfoto, John3:16, Cathay Photo and even the supposedly not that recommended Bally Photo and Alan Photo. And I just walk into the shop without going for specific sales person. I think Singapore electronic scene is fine, just like the rest of the electronic scene in the world, they might not be the cheapest, but they certainly is okay.

And I would think that up till now (after so many years), I have not been chopped.

Well two things.. Either:

1) You're overpaying and you don't know it.
2) You're overpaying and you don't care.

There's no way you'd get "good" service at electronics stores in Singapore unless you're paying more then market rate. I'll agree with you that I can walk into any SG store, ask for a battery be quoted $80, buy it and walk out, all the while the sales staff are plenty polite.. However, you'll feel real bad about yourself when you find out your friend got the same battery from the same store for $50. So for the $30 extra bucks you paid the sales staff will definitely treat you well.

I find your comments are bias and unfair to those salespersons who making a honest living by serving their customers with sincerity and integrity.

anyway, it is an old thread and TS already move on, just let the discussion rest in peace.
