Hi guys,
I tried shooting some IR and this is my setup:
Canon 30D with 17-40mm f4L
Cokin P007 filter pressed onto lens so that there's no light leak

I took a shot of grass with the filter on and set my custom white balance to that but when I took another shot of the same grass with the same settings except for the white balance, the grass had a green tint to it.

That is also true for any foliage I tried to shoot, all had a green tint.

Is this because of the filter or is this because of my white balancing?

I would suspect the white balance is off...

This is what I do for white balance

Take a photo of grass with the filter on using AWB
Use that image for custom white balance
Set the camera to custom white balance

Cokin P007 has never gave good IR results with any of my Canon DSLRs.
Try using Hoya R72 instead.

Hi there,

I believe that you got the WB wrong. Why not try posting a picture up to let us see the problem.
Thanks.

Hi,

Tomcat is right, Cokin 007 does not really work well with Canon. As far as I have tried it on my Canon 20D, the foliage turns out in dark tones. just like doing black and white.

instead, try with Hoya R72.

I have also used the 17-40L. it can give you a good result with the R72.

note that even with correct custom wb, i would think that you would not get pure white foliage, still needs pp desaturation to get pure white foliage?

correct me if i'm wrong though, i have only managed to get exact exact correct custom wb once in my life on my own cameras, not sure if it's because of camera or me :dunno: from what i remember canon quite easy to get correct custom wb, hee hee

It is very easy to get the correct CWB with Canon DSLRs using the R72 filter but impossible with the Cokin P007 filters. No matter how the CWB is carried out, the results would look like a deeply red-tinted coloured image. :(

ah yes, was talking with regards to r72, have never actually worked with p007 before :)
