My first terrible deal, Newbies beware.

Hi Guys

Thought I'd share my recent experience jumping into the manual focus world, so that others don't make the same mistake I have.

Been shooting for about a year now, and have decided to try out manual lenses. I was in the market for a VM-E Close Focus Adapter. My friend who was also looking for a VM-E posted a WTB for a VM-E Close focus adapter, and someone contacted him that they had one for $250.

He forwarded the contact to me as his acquisition was not urgent and I made a deal with the seller thinking VM-E $250 is about the same going rate on clubsnap. They said there was no box as he lost it. I did not know there was a non-close focus variant of the VM-E, And also did not know about the mechanism it comes with to 'activate' close focus mode (still new to this area), however after trying to test out the min focus distance a few days later I noticed it was still very far, I then did some research online and found that I was sold a Voightlander VM adapter II, which usually sells for $130 (according to previous posts on CS).

I tried to contact the seller but all my posts have been blue ticked and no reply, I have also tried to call him 3 times but no answer. Needless to say I will probably never see that money again.

Looking back I should have researched exactly what the adapter looked like, I assumed because he was charging $250 and It was a VM-E adapter it would be the one i was looking for.

All my previous deals have gone smoothly and you just wouldn't think something like this would happen in the gentlmanly world of Singapore photography.

It is a shame that there are those of us out there who do not care about growing the Singapore photography scene but would rather prey on the newbies trying to learn the craft. For me, I will be looking to unload the adapter at half the price I paid for it and buying a brand new VM-E close Focus adapter.

Having said this, all the other sellers I have dealt with to acquire my current gear have been nothing but helpful and given me tips and insights into photography.

In the future I would advise avoiding clubsnap member Bentth or do you research before purchasing anything from him.

Good luck out there guys!

Cheers

I think we all had our fare share of deal where we paid tuition fees instead of getting what we needed. Buy&Sell has a certain amount of sellers who only trade equipment, they don't seem to be photographers. My advices:
1) Never rush, the same article pops up again, sooner or later
2) Do your research, post your questions into the equipment sections here. A Google search with '[equipment item] problems' will give a good overview about known issues.
3) Read the many guidelines about buying second hand stuff.

Thanks, indeed now I know.
