Why not rent some lenses 1st then decide which suit u best? Lucky for u, there r a lot of ppl/centers providing canon rentals.

Hi guys,
I have been using my 7D n the 18-200 + 50mm F1.8 combi for a few days. Starting to appreciate the power of lens. The 18-200mm is a convenient lens to have but like some of the guys have mentioned. The two ends of its focal length are pretty weak. Pretty useless indoors with poor lighting whereas the 50mm F1.8 performs brilliantly indoors with low light. I have yet to test it outdoors. End of the day, this is the setup that I decided on to start my DSLR journey. I will make mistakes n wrong choices along the way but with you guys to help out, I am pretty sure they won't be many.

Do this bro and see which is best to your liking. However be mindful of the Image quality of each lens you mentioned.

I have playing around with the 7D these few days. Starting to get an idea of what I might need. Will be getting a macro lens next. Maybe a 100mm F2.8L.

Considering getting the 430ex flash n maybe the 85 f2.8L. Any comments guys? Thanks!

My bad, it's the F1.2L. For some reason, I kept thinking all the L lenses are F2.8!

Go for it if you can afford it.
Generally (though there are probably some exceptions) I don't think people complain about poor quality from the high-end (read: expensive) lenses. Most complaints are about size/weight and of course price

I think you got to know what you need. It sure is fun to have lots of lenses to play with and if u can afford why not?
Maybe when you ask this qn, you dont really why you should/should not get it? (I am guessing)
As oppose to " should i get the 85mm F1.2L? because i really wanna take XXX and this lens seems to be able to fulill XXX blah blah blah.." --> gives me a feeling of you knowing what you need and why are you considering getting it.. Because everyone has a general view towards a lens but the view of this lens fulfilling what they want to shoot is very subjective.

Thanks bro for the advice. After a weekend out with my 7D, 50mm F1.8 n 18-200, I find that this combination is ok for my use right now. The 18-200mm performs satisfactorily in outdoor while the 50mm F1.8 is good for indoors. I am thinking of getting the 17-55mm F2.8 to complement my lenses as I feel that I need more focal length range indoors.

50/1.8 is a fast lens, though on a crop-factor camera such as the 7D, it's kinda restrictive for indoor usage.
Perhaps you can consider a fast yet 'wider-than-50' prime lens, the Sigma 30/1.4?
Again, no zoom (might be an issue), but the f/1.4 is hard to ignore. Also significantly cheaper than 17-55/2.8

Ordered a Canon 17-55mm. Looking at the 100mm F2.8 next for my macro needs.
Not sure about u bro.. For me i find 50/1.8 excellent for portraits.. but it's abit very tight in indoors.. esp when the house has quite a number of people (ie CNY..)

I definitely do concur with you guys. The 50mm is ok for indoor portraits, but I do find a need for a wider prime lens. That will be on my to-get list.

Had a few hours with my 17-55mm. Absolutely happy with the USM motor n IS combination. Fast and sharp pictures!! Absolutely delighted with my purchase!
