Never have err 99 before from what I have used before....300D, 10D, 5D, 1D2, 1D3, 7D....all no issue. I think the word here to use is just pure suay!

SometImes its really a matter of luck man. Did you shoot under direct hot sunlight? I believe aussie kinda scrching hot at year end! Bcos i kana 1 time during tracking under scrching sun. I believe 5d or 5dii might not be too reliable in more extreme situations. Of cos end of the day still heng suay...

I have err99 once when testing a sigma 70-300 on my 400D, seller was kind enough to buy back the lense (bought it without testing).

So far no error on my FF. Your friend must not care much for his cam if he didn't sent it in when getting the first err99 message.

On another note, my friends D200 ate his CF cards - after a few shots, the card just died, put in another card and the same thing happen. **** happens no matter which side you're on.

Lesson to be learnt: Be PREPARED.

If going on a holiday, an extra P&S is very handy. And when taking very important occasions, spare cameras are a must.

If you are just doing casual shooting, whether your bring 1 or 2 or more, is up to you carry the equipment.

Personally I'd have a P&S to back up the 5DII and a 1DsIII to back up the P&S and a 1DIV to back up the 1DsIII and a 7D just in case all that dies. But then if that dies then I'll know I'll not have prepared enough :D

(that's a joke you lot for those of you who haven't read it that way.)

My 1D3 is a back up for my eye balls and the 7D is a backup for the 1D3 and have a Fujifilm F50D as a backup to the 7D.

encountered once with my 450D, realized the problem is caused by camera was reading same files from 2 folders. Not sure how it happened, once you format the card problem solved.

Has a chat with my friend this morning. He said the Service Centre exchange his 5D with the new set. The problem is shutter part is damaged. But CSC (Sydney) doesn't has spare part to fix it. Since my friend agitated when they ask him to wait for spare part, CSC finally agree for exchange for 1 to 1 instead (since they has spare set).
Oh yeah, southern part of Australia very hot lately, that's why I said "hot" Christmas...

People tends to report only problems in the forum. I don't see people creating threads just to say their cameras are working perfectly. For the manufacturer who has a bigger customer base, there will be more incidents that the camera will malfunction so you hear more problem from Canon than from Sony e.g.

my thoughts exactly.

one more thing to add is that anything posted on the web tends to be exaggerated so badly. i read sooooooo many bad things about the leica M8 but when i actually got one, i wondered what so bad about it.

another  for the 5D2. no problems, great cam since day 1. worked it in colder temperatures, in a sandy environment, across a wide variety of lenses to great effect.

the only canon product i have a 'complaint' is the 50L - if only the focus accuracy could be like that on 85L. anyways im still using and enjoying it. in facts, its probably on my body 80% of the time at least.

I had error 99 when I was using 400D, sent it to CSS and was told the contact between the lens and camera was dirty. they cleaned it up and walah ... back in business again

during my trip to Europe, same thing happened to my 50D, I cleaned up the contact points on the camera and lens and like magic no more error 99...

I did "extensive research" and in my case it was the user problem ... me. I did not look after my camera well : :embrass:

you are not fated with Canon system~

try others~ :bsmilie:
