MTV i shot n edit (first try, please be gentle!)

its is pretty good, technically sound as well (from my untrained eyes at least)

minor nitpicks 1 is that gayle is wearing the same wardrobe for all scenes, you did well with a change of scenery everynow and then, but if you could just get them to have another non singing story going on where you can cut to, it might help. Or just some b-roll footage of them during the day to break the monotony.

nitpick 2 is that the framing for the guy playing the cajun drums are neither here nor there. Could be better if you could have lowered it slightly to frame more of the cajun box and his hands working it it, rather than how it is currently....... the crotch is sorta grabbing my attention.... ahahah

nitpick 3 is that, you dont have them all performing together. Maybe this is a logistic or scheduling issue? Might be a personal style for you, but to me it adds some cohesion between the 3 ppl involved.

Hello! thanks for your comments, ya the story was that "they not suppose to meet each other until the last part, thus no together shots)

Same wardrobe because all was shot within 3 hours and the place we shooting at not near any one house haha

ya the b-rolls was suppose to be better, but due to space constraint and as it was my first time, i was abit kanchiong haha, but thanks for your advice! will take note and do a better job next time :D

hi pal,

i think that the lighting throughout the exterior scene is really inconsistent. Its orange background light, but blue light filling their faces. Not very natural, perhaps you could use some filter gel on the lights?

Noted bro, I'm thinking to shoot without lights at all next time since we reshooting; since the mark 3 seems to be able to perform well under low light ^^

Try exploring different angles and focal lengths. Your shots are mostly medium and wide shots. Also look out for the headroom., a lot of them are being cut.

Mantiz>>> I feel it is a good shot since you mentioned it is your first time. Got to start somewhere and got to get dirty, only then, I believe we can better ourselves and learn. :) Coming from a newbie in videography.

1. The lighting, especially, when the singers walking. It was quite good. I really love the lighting in the part where the guy playing the cajun.
2. The colours are full. Not over-saturated.
3. Sharpness. What can I say, you are using 5DM3.

1. Further develop the "journey" for the girl and the boy to meet up. In the video, the "journey" was not really develop. You can just make the girl walking down the stairs of the house, going outside to get reception and end up at the very spot where she is standing at the end in the video. Same goes for the guy.
2. Framing wise, try to mix it up. You need to move the audience, in a way. My only pointers dun try to cut your subjects at the joints, like shoulder, neck, elbow, knee. Usually mid shot, try not to cut headroom. If you are doing close up, headroom can be cut but not the chin area.
3. Try to finish up your shot. Example, you were focusing the guy playing the cajun then you want to rack focus into the guitar. Just when the guitar wanting to get focused, you cut it away.

- A BIG NO NO!! Even you are shooting with 5DM3, you still need the lights!!!! :)

I am also on a learning journey in videography. My inputs are merely from my learning mistakes and from people who have pointed them out to me. I am just sharing. I am no real pro. Overall, your video is technically better than mine. Good Job!!

Anyway, you might want to take a look this video about framing.

ya the headcuts are because i was flying w a glidecam hd2000....... IN A SLIPPER , so my slipper fall off and i couldnt get the shot, anyway, we are reshooting the girl part (as they say she look too happy), they didnt want too much drama story, just a performance shot, thus like this lo, no journey hahahah,

we didnt have time to b-roll cause the shot was only done in 3 hours, so now we schedule the next shot, too rush :D

but thanks for your advices, i know what to look out for the next time

Agree. under any circumstances TS, you need lighting to light your subjects well. Be it an LED, redhead, arri, or just a reflector to reflect the lamp post/ambient lights. 5dmk3 can't perform under low lighting situation in video. Sony F35 and Arri Alexa can.

In any production, be it for fun or serious. Do not wear slippers! Number 1: Easily trip and fall, damaging equipments. It's a big loss because you wore a $20 slipper. I don't do B roll, simply because it's not a big scale production. The role just wastes Hard disk space and manpower, in which he could at least hold a reflector or a boom mic instead of another camera.

Generally i suggest not to do a reshoot. You do not want to keep lingering in the past. Move forward from the mistakes you made and make a brand new video. Going back to the past isn't the solution to your existing problems.

Keep shooting and Never re shoot unless it's really important (Client etc).

A very good job considering it's your very first video ever!

The suggestion here to add more lights is spot on (no pun intended). The feeling I got from watching the MV was that the video was shot secretly in a very secluded area so nobody can see. A bit eerie for the song :D

Just one suggestion: you can add a scene with both singers singing at the same time but separated by a "wall", i.e. a thick black vertical bar.

You are right, no journey is necessary for this MV. Just the simple one you did is good enough. Less is more.

nice work *thumbs up*

I'am not a pro in video but heres my 2 cents worth (:

Love that you're actually making some music videos and its definitely a good first/second try!

The only 2 things for me are (like everyone else has said) the color grading and the lighting. If u're going to have your light your subject with a certain light try to keep the WB constant throughout or at least relative to that scene. For example sometimes it comes back to the same "scene" but the WB is different.

The other thing is that as the song is probably overlayed and not recorded real time together with the video therefore watch the audio/video sync (especially obvious at the end of sentences), sometimes the mouths close before the sung lyrics in the music ends. Probably nothing you could do about it but remind your actors to "lip sync" (if they are doing that) till the end of the whole line till it fades off.

otherwise great! =)
cheers!

Hi,

I think your lighting in the second round is much better, more consistent with the BG. And i liked the idea of how they would eventually meet up.

But i felt there was some consistency issues, like how the first scene of the girl was on the phone, the road was on the right side. Then during the ending part the road switched to the left. Also the two shots of the payphone doesnt match up, first he was facing right, then he face left for your close up shot. I feel you should plan according to your last shot, girl on left, guy on right.

Just my humble opinion. hope it helps :)
