is high iso the norm for flash photog?

Just to add to Darkforce, the idea of using higher ISO is to capture more details in the background where the flash can't reach and not illuminate. If you use ISO 100 at the motor show, you may simply end up with the subject with a very dark background, which may not be flattening especially with asian's dark hair... But well, unless that's the effect you wanna achieve...

I am very new to this forum, but looking at your picture give me the urge to take photos. Currently I have a point and shoot camera, and I wanted to get a DSLR just like your.

From you preference, compare between a Nikon D70 and a Canon 300D, which one would you prefered to get.

yup, i think i know the effect you're describing.

but i'll either use slow or rear sync to get the background details.

But then your shutter speed might be too slow - so you'll need to bump up the ISO to keep the shutter speed at a reasonable speed. As you can see on chisiang's shots, with ISO 320 on his D70 the results are very good.

Well, I bought the D70 for a few reasons, not that the 300D was inferior.

I bought it because I used to own a Nikon and the lenses can still be used. But then those are really entry level lenses, and I've acquired a whole new range of lenses now.

When buying DSLR, or in fact any SLR, also consider the range of lenses and upgrades available, as well as the cost :sweat:

Both Nikon and Canon are fantastic camera makers, it's now about which faction to pick :bsmilie:

Well, it all depends on situation. There's no single rule or a fix formula to using ISO. If possible, you would always want to shoot at the lowest possible ISO because of the noise, or grain.

Using high ISO allows you to shoot at higher shutter speed, while on the other hand, controling your ISO allows you to manipulate the brightness of your background or bokeh. This will help you focus your attention on the subject. Or with clearer background lets your photo tell others the situation it was when the photo was taken (eg war)

You just have to experiment. Play around and never rush. Also analyse what you need. If in doubts, simply just take a few shots with different ISO, we're in digital these days! :lovegrin:

That's why I love fast lenses :lovegrin: f/2.8!!! Hopefully all lense will come equip with VR in the future :lovegrin:

But well, f2.8's DOF is a bit too narrow for me personally... And yeah, I can't afford them
