Most Suitable Lens for Portrait

I don't recall Maddog mentioning anything about Bokah...Nor did I state that any of the lense were better than the Nik 200 f2... and contrary to your love for Bokah, its not always the most sought after criteria for rating a good portrait lens...Not to mention the extreme price of the 200 f2...I also own a 105 f1.8...an 85 f1.4 a Canon 50 f1.2... a Nik 300 f2.8 a nik 600 f4...several 4x5 cameras with lense that will give much better bokah than your 200 f2...SO WHAT! The two lense I mentioned were merely my recomendation from several decades of experience...

Anyway Cheers

Good for you.

So please, DO recommend THE BEST for TS. What with all your extensive experience.

Or are you still going to say that the 180mm is THE BEST among all the lenses that you have used? :dunno:

P.S: I'm sorry, but in my few years of experience, which is insignificant compared to yours, I've never come across the word "bokah". Please share with the rest of us who might be much less experienced what this magic is.

erm..i think the TS must be very confused by now...anyway, I think TCW is selling grey 85mm f1.8 at $625.

My friend just purchased last friday... local warranty 85 f1.8 af-d at SLRevo for $610. :)

In my original thread I did not mention Bokeh, I believe you did in your promotion of the Nik 200 f2, I do not think you or anyone can say there is any one "best lens" which is my basic point all along...my first comment was what lenses I liked to use most often (for portrait) You decided to coment on Bokeh of the 180 vs the 200 not me! I have no doubt that the 200 f2 is an excellent lense... You seem to think that any other recomendations are no good because of bokeh...well thats OK with me,:) its your opinion. As for my years of experience comment, that just means that I'm a cheap old fart! To tell you the truth my favorite crowd rig for portraits is my new little 4/3 Oly e-pl1 with a pentax "c mount" 25 1.4...but thats for another secttion of this forum... I guess in the studio (where I do most of my model shots) I will stick to the 24-120 on the old Nk d200...Its convenient and keeps me from moving back and forth to much... I love the little 180m f2.8 because its , lightweight, and well built...and relatively cheap...I love the feel and looks of the 200 f2 but its not cheap and it was a choice between that and a new 300 f2.8 at the time...Back to the 4/3m for a moment, I am seriously thinking of getting the Oly 150m f2...much lighter and also a lot cheaper..(300 f2 equiv in FF) any way you asked...

Again I offer a smile and a truce!!!

Cheers

The bokeh you can achieve with the 180mm f/2.8 is not comparable at all to the 200mm f/2's.

Another lens you can consider is the 135mm f/2 DC. It is just the right weight for handling with the D300. The 180mm felt too light even with my D200.

Here is where the word Bokeh came into the discussion,,,:dunno: If your joking about my spelling error in the earlier post for the word bokeh , I'll gladly take the hit. Anyway I'm not trying to start a fight just be sure that I will give my opinion, just like you! This forum would be very boring if we all agreed with each other wouldn't it...Might I ask who you sell your photo's to? are you working for the media per chance???

cheers

Yes, I agree with you on disagreeing.

I just happen to think that TS is looking for "the best" and the 180mm felt very far from being close to cutting it. It's not just the bokeh that bothered me, but I'd actually like to see Nikon update the lens.

I don't work for the media. Why do you ask? I seriously need a job though...

Then, I might not be going around picking on others' spelling mistakes. :bsmilie:

two threads has merge into one, with regards about Maddog original question post #24, without know what current lenses he owned, and he only want ONE BEST Portrait Lens for D300.

the answer is simple and already given by many members.

*ahem* i might as well take the chance to remind everyone to be civil? these kind of threads usually get nowhere... fast.

and, if i might so quote our mod ortega on this - the best/suitable lens for _____ (insert purpose) is the one found in your bag and on the cam, not in the dry cabinet.

if ones can afford this lens, why would he want squeeze with people? can jolly well hire his own private model.
the only reason want to use this lens in a group shoot is to hou lian around.

IMO, there is nothing to "hao lian" about or to show off in a group shoot. Do price/prestige goes hand in hand with the size of the gear? Somewhat similar to the proverbial phallic symbol? I once met a chap who has got the size of a sumo wrestler, sporting a tiny Leica in a group shoot - I got to control myself from laughing out loud.:bsmilie:

To show off genuinely, got to arrive at the shoot in a BMW or better still a Porsche. And ask the model where she's heading after the shoot. So, can give her a lift. ;p

Well, a lens that cost 5k is nothing compared with a 200k BMW.

let say in the XMM model photoshot, you shoot with a long lens and have to stand far far away, is either you shoot other photographers backside or asking people step aside.

if you asking follow photographer give way to you, some might asked, why must I give way? I didn't pay money izit? or becos your lens very "tua kee"?

you get my point?

haha, i saw you all commented... for portrait lens..

if let say about you carry on hand for whole day long with D3 + AFS 200mm f2G

or carry D300 + AF 180mm f/2.8D = 270mm eq. or 135mm DC = 202mm f2
i still can walk whole day long in botanic garden holding on hand.. lens and body..

but i can't imaging you all using the D3/D700 + AFS 200mm f/2G without monopod to carry on hand,
and without driving car to the destination, just go for take bus and Mrt to the place..

rich ppl are have rich thinking of mind..
poor ppl just using everything is lighter and better..

haha

Hi all,
I have an Nikon D5000 camera. I am thinking to buy a portrait lens but most of the lens doesn't work Auto focus function with D5000. May I know which lens should I buy to get a good portrait.

Have you even read through this thread?

Anyways, there is really no such thing as a portrait lens. The 18-55, when used to take a portrait, can become a portrait lens too. Whether a portrait is good or not is a whole other issue...

That being said, you can consider the 200mm f/2. It will autofocus on your D5000 too.

Not a moment to consider that is just "Buy it" cos it will be a very good portrait lens.

D90 with Nikon 50mm f/1.8 D..............AF is very fast on camera. One full turn of the AF screw focuses the lens from infinity to 6 feet (1.8m).

i think all lens can take good portraits :)

It up to individual what kind of photo he want to produce.
