No issue with the magenta cast, true . . . but not enough resolution, either!
RF wides are fantastic on the NEX-7. But fixing the magenta cast sucks some details out of the "repaired" areas. AND...something I just found out when doing an A/B comparison of my CV 15mm on my NEX-7 and 5N, the presence of the magenta cast alters the white balance on the NEX-7.
So I set out to find some decent SLR glass in the
effective FL range of 24-35mm (SLR lenses that are roughly in the 16-24mm range).
Guess what? I ain't found none yet! Sony's a-mount Zeiss stuff was mostly geared to 24MP FF; absence of detail, CA that wasn't intended to be magnified, and shitty image texture make them look not so good on the NEX-7.
Forget regular a-mount stuff . . . my 20mm 2.8, which took spectacular images on my a900, shows so much CA--
even in the middle of the frame--on the NEX-7 that it looks almost like Lomo.
R-mount stuff in this range comprises mostly old designs--like 20-40 years old. The one wide I tried just didn't cut the mustard on the NEX-7.
Not surprisingly, the two best (or should I say
least bad) wides I've tried on the NEX-7 were crop sensor zooms: the CZA DT 16-80mm and the 16-50mm f/2.8, with the latter seeming to have an edge over the former. The 16-50mm's weaknesses are mostly manageable with PP'ing, and both lenses are pleasingly sharp in the middle of the frame at the wider FL's.
I'd like to try the 24mm f/1.8, but Sony Wisma didn't even have a demo copy when I was there the other day. I've read in several places, though, that it has a focus shift problem--yet another reason to love lenses
without auto-aperture.
Looks like the only alternative would be the Zeiss ZF/ZE stuff, but who wants to shell out that kind of $$$ for a FF lens to use on a crop sensor?
Okay, geniuses . . . any suggestions?
