Want to buy, buy. As long as it fit your wallet, go for it! You will not have the 2nd life to try it. If one will to count every single cent, then perhaps he should just move on and look elsewhere.

the D300 uses en-el3, which is the same as d200 and D70....
it comes with a charger to charge the en-el3 batteries....

but the battery pack can be used with AA batteries or the en-el4a battery.
AA batteries and charger, not a problem cause almost everyone has one.
but if want to use the en-el4a battery, you must buy charger yourself, and not cheap.
unless user already have a D2x or D3 camera, then no problem...

so, in short, want to use vertical grip for D300, got to shell out quite a bit of money due to charger....
cause i think the weight of the vertical grip and AA batteries is quite a lot compared to en-el4a alone.... moreover, dun know what is the battery life of AA battery on the D300....

"The battery grip holds one EN-EL3e, EN-EL4, or EN-EL4a battery, or eight AA batteries (the camera's battery stays in its slot). The battery grip doesn't just allow for double the battery life of the D300 alone -- it also lets the camera shoot faster in continuous shooting mode (as fast as 8 frames/second when using the EN-EL4a or AA batteries). Well put it this way:

Using EN-EL4a

PROS
- Faster 8fps
- Longer battery life
- Tons of pics can be taken
- Lighter compared to AAs


CONS
- Got to buy the batt charger unless you're a D2h/D2x users
- Got to buy the BL3 adaptor for the batt

Using AAs

PROS
- Easy availabilites
- Cheaper if using rechargerables
- Hi-powered rechagerables at 2700mah

CONS
- Heavier
- Takes less pics (if using Alkaline)
- Charging time for 8! batts may takes ages (depending on batt capacitiy and charger)

only problem with AAs is too heavy.... imo...
also, need to charge 8 at one go... a bit xiong....
also, dun know how long AAs will last compared to en-el4a...
but en-el4a need to buy charger.... which is quite..hmm... how to put it... "wasteful" ??
