mode questions

hi guys, im new here as well as with my DC(G2). :embrass:
i still don't know nor understand how the functions like M, Av, Tv, P works so i always leave it as it is.
i only play around with the others like Auto, Landscape, Potriat, Pan Focus, Night Scene, Stitch Assist, Macro and Movie mode.
the settings like the Shuttle Speed, ISO, etc stuffs is driving me nuts as this is the first time i'm handling a camera(played around with a compact cam of course).
i have tried my very best to read up on sites and the manual but the thing is i couldn't understand without any photography knowledge like the photography terms, etc.

so can someone kind enough to teach me the basics?
or is there a very very 'shallow' sites for newbies like me?


i believe i will go futher with your help and your effort will be greatly appreciated.

After reading the site and the thread (which seems very confusing now that I read my own reply), just ask any questions, I'll try to help.

I also got my camera about half a year ago, and I knew nothing about all these. I started with the book: digital photography for dummies. Hee hee... I still have it here somewhere...

anyway Flare, where do i find the WB on G2? or is it about the slave-flash or something?
another thing is, how do i know which to change in what kind of situation? (the shuttle speed and ISO)

i did a little test with the shuttle speed and ISO after reading up your post.
found out that the snap i took with ISO400 with flash turns out to be over exposured.
so both shuttle speed and ISO have the same function? to make snaps brighter?
or could you define in a simplier way if im wrong? ;p

The WB button is located in the right side of the LCD. I don't have the camera with me right now, but I believe is the middle button.
Don't forget to read the manual.

Hmmmm... mEc mentioned some problems with the G2's flash.... Better ask mEc or other G2 users about it. At ISo 400 with flash should not give over exposed image as the flash should measure the ambient lighting and give out a correct flash out puter with the camera's ISO, aperture, shutter setting in consideration...

BTW, why do you want to use ISO 400 with flash? Unless the flash is not powerful enough. If the power of the flash is not a problem, try to use a lower ISO as high ISO gives noise...

Hmmm about shutter speed and ISO... Let's say you can use flash and you don't mind the effect of the flash, just use the flash to give a shutter speed that can be hand held. Let's say you cannot use the flash, such as in the museum or during a sports game and you don't have a tripod, or cannot use a tripod (such as museums and concerts), use a higher ISO so that the shutter speed is faster and hand holding is easier. Or sometimes, you don't like the effect of the flash, use a higher ISO to achieve a faster shutter speed.

hmmm, last night i went out to snap around in the city with my friend and i was using M mode all the way as i didn't know how to change the shuttle speed for the other modes like Landscape, Potriat, Pan Focus, Night Scene.

bah, really sick of the manual. kekke. ;p

Hee hee... getting the hang of it? Try other 'semi-manual modes' (as i call them) such as shutter piority and Aperture piority... See what they do, and think of how they can be used and what situations will these be the most useful.
