Does it works well with RiData 20x?

Is there a compatible list of memory card this XDRIVE II supported?

The compatiblity problem is more with RiData than with X-Drive II. RiData has problems with few camera models as well as some card readers. X-Drive II only has problems when RiData cards are used. All other types/brands of media have zero incident with X-Drive II. EastGear.com works closely with X-Drive II manufacturer to constantly monitor the progress of X-Drive II in the market and amongst users.

We would advise users NOT to use RiData media with X-Drive II.

Uh too bad then.

Xdrive is not for me :(

All my cards are Ridata... and i have no problem with my G2 and 10D.

Maybe next time ... thanks

oh dear, i have a lot of Ridata...:(

Can I ask for some support for the Xdrive here? I got the 40G X-drive and I tried to format it under various operating systems. First under Win xp, but when I saw the drive, it only allowed me the NTFS option. Then I went to an older Win 98 and Win 2k computer, they had VFAT 32 and VFAT options for formatting, but after doing the format, they would say that the format could not be completed without any explanation as to why.

Later someone told me that VFAT does not support HDD more than 32G. So I went into linux and repartitioned the drive with fdisk. I created a 30GB partition and a (about) 9Gb partition. The 30GB partition was then formatted fine under windows. However I have an extra 9G sitting on that HDD that I am not able to use. I would like to be able to swap between the 30GB partition and 9GB partition, but the X-drive does not seem to support that feature. When I try to format the 9G partition, it says that the partition is not enabled. I can't really use it, so I seem to have 9G wasted. Can that extra space be used somehow? Even if it cannot be used together, if it can be used as a separate HDD that would be fine for me. I just don't want to let it go to waste.

When you FDISK the HDD, did you create a partition for the remaining 9GB of HDD space? If not, then you can't, cos windows won't be able to see it. :)

Toasty,

X-Drive II like most portable image storage system do not support harddisk partitions.

You need to use Win 98 OS to format a 40GB harddisk to FAT32 file system. Install the X-Drive II drivers from the driver CD-ROM provided. FDISK the 40GB harddisk to single primary partition and enable large hardisk support. Format the 40GB to FAT32 file system.

Let me know if you have any difficulties.

Thanks and regards.

espn,
Yes I created a partition using Linux. I tried an extended and logical partition. I could see the partition in windows, but I could not access it.

EastGear,
I tried formatting the whole HDD on a win98 machine to a FAT 32 filesystem. After waiting over an hour, the computer said that the format could not be completed. It did not give any explanation, but later someone told me that FAT32 does not support HDD larger than 32G? Do I need to install the drivers before trying to format?

I am not sure about the driver installation. When I click the setup icon, it initiates the install wizard and I just click next next. when the installation is finished, it does not say anything. Some MSDOS windows popup too fast for me to read what is being said, but I think it may have had the word "error" on the window. However, after the driver installation, I can see the X-drive, so I assume the driver was successfully installed. However, when I try to format the 40G HDD, after waiting a long time, it finally tells me that the format cannot be completed. That was when I had a friend help me go into linux and create a 30G partition. This 30G paritition was created in Linux and formatted in windows XP as FAT32. After this was done, the Xdrive works, but I am losing almost 10G.

People have told me that FAT32 does not support >32G. So I would like to double check, whether you have actually managed to get a 40G harddrive formatted and working with the Xdrive? You said I have to enable large harddisk support, where is that option to enable or disable it?

On the whole though, I would like to say that I really like the X-drive. It is fast, quiet, useful and flexible. If only it supports NTFS.

Right now it is dualling as an external HDD. I have no power problems because of the battery/power supply.

Hi Eastgear,

I'm posting here so that everybody can help me and see what's wrong ;)

I'm using Win2K Pro at home, I plug in the drive, it works perfectly able to detect without needing to install any drivers.

J, K, L, M, is detected where J is the HDD.

However, in office (and my laptop) I'm using WinXP Pro, the drive is detected with a generic icon but unable to be read.

I is detected but keeps telling me 'Insert a disk'.

After installing the drivers (downloaded from the website) the icon has changed but still same tells me to 'Insert a disk'.

I went to another machine with Win2K Server, similarly no drivers needed and all the 4 drives are dected and displayed in windows explorer.

Any suggestions ? :)

Reason for me asking: I'm using the X-driveII in replacement for my laptop I'm selling soon as storage. So I need the drive to work on WinXP Pro.

Hi Toasty,

Can I suggest, you start up fdisk to see the 2 drives in the X-drive whilst in Win98.

Then delete the 9GB partition and then create it again. See if it works :)

I think the 40GB limitation is on the hardware then the software.

My Asus P5a could not detect 40 but 32GB. Whereas my Asus A7V133 can detect fully 40GB. So I think it's more on the hardware then OS. :)

Else remove all paritions split up 30/10, but X-DriveII can only view the first partition, and all copying of files would be made to the 30GB partition and not the 10GB partition.

Toasty,

we did get a 40GB even 60GB(!) formatted to FAT32 on Win98.
Try reinstalling the drivers on the Win98
Do a FDISK in DOS mode to delete your 2nd partition
Set 1 primary partition.
FDISK will ask if you want to enable large harddisk support
Select YES
Go back to Win98 and format the 40GB to FAT32.

In theory, FAT32 can support up to 8 terabytes, but Microsoft being too smart makes it compulsary to format any harddisk > 32MB to NTFS. NTFS is implemented from Win2K onwards, hence if you use Win98 to format, it is possible to format harddisk > 32MB

espn,

the X-Drive II like most portable image storage system can only support singe harddisk partition. If you revert the HDD in X-Drive II to single partition, it should work fine in all OS.

Hi Eastgear,

I didn't partition, am using the drive as is :) 20GB full, Fat32. I use the X-DriveII as is also :)

Hi Eastgear,

Ok, after running the whole process entirely on a windows 98 machine, I was able to format the full 40G as you said. Now the X-drive is working just fine. Thank you for your advice. It's really convenient and I like using it.

I have another 20G HDD that is inside a mantec casing. I often have problems with the power of the USB port. There are no such problems with the X-Drive due to the battery/power supply.

Do you know if any upgraded version of an X-drive will be released in the near future? For example, one that allows us to put information from the HDD back onto the card (away from the PC)?

Thanks for all your help.

Please add your name to the following list
==============================
1) myname ( xx units with xxGB harddisk)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)

8)
9)
10)

It has come to our attention that some shops are selling parallel import versions of the X-Drive II. Do note that:
1) They have no direct contacts with the manufacturer and hence servicing will go through a 3rd party which may be lengthy, difficult and troublesome.
2) They do not provide the car charger and have no intention of bringing in the car charger or any other additional accessories for the X-Drive II.
3) The AC adaptor provided is heavier, of poorer built quality and has no earthing properties.
4) Carry bag provided is not original, of poorer quality and does not carry the X-Drive II logo
5) No local warranty or servicing provided since parallel importers do not carry spare parts needed for servicing.

We, EastGear.com are the only official distributor of X-Drive II in Singapore. We carry the most stock of X-Drive II, offering them at the most competitive. You will not find a similar product at a cheaper price anywhere. We will not provide any warranty, servicing or sell additional accessories for units not brought from us

Advantages from buying from a local distributor
=================================
1) 1 year local (Singapore) warranty
2) 14 days 1-for-1 exchange
3) Local support (quick response and no need to email, make overseas calls and pay overseas shipping charges for repairs)
4) Access to accessories at special discount (only for customers who buy the X-Drive-II from us)
5) Free installation of harddisk

Note on extra Li-Ion batteries
=====================
I have been advised by the manufacturer that the Li-Ion battery is meant to be built in and NOT meant to be removable. Removing the battery requires unscrewing to remove the casing and removal of harddisk from the casing. It is definitely not easy to remove the battery while on the go and you would risk damaging the internal circuits if you change and swap batteries too often. It also does not make sense to keep a spare battery in case the original battery fails as it is a known fact that Li-Ion has a shelf life of about 1 year. Your spare battery will deteriorate at the same rate as your original battery. If your original battery do fail after 1 year, our company will offer replacement batteries for sale at a special price to our customers. We will also be offering an external battery pack that uses AA size Ni-MH rechargable batteries very soon for those who wants to prolong the usage of the X-Drive-II. Our experience show that the latest Ni-MH batteries outlast the internal Li-Ion battery pack.

Order and enqueries, please email xdrive@eastgear.com or call 96226876.

Hmm apologising in one post and then making price comparisons to memory world in a subsequent post?

I have no business relationship to Eastgear but would like to add that Eastgear is a nice person to do business with and makes it a point to attend SEEDs to make it easy for people to collect their batteries/chargers etc. Good service for clubsnappers

If you want an X-drive at Memory World prices, then buy from Memory World.

upz for Eastgear

Erwinx --> Is price comparsion a wrong thing to do ? Why so denfensive. Or do you just have something aginst me ?

Maybe I should re-pharse my question to Eastgear.

Can you offer the same pricing $182 with GST (without the car-charger --> price offered by memory world)
OR must I buy with the car-charger. No option of taking not taking the car-charger.

Eastgear --> "EastGear.com will NOT service or sell accessories to customers who purchase the X-Drive II from non official sources and parallel importers."

Is Memory World one of you 'OFFICAL SOURCE' which you will honour the warranty ?
I am asking this because I do not need the car charger and I want to know in terms of warranty and servicing are you covering for Memory World ?
That is ...is Memory World one of your (offical source)->Reseller ?
I may re-consider if Memory World is not your reseller coz warranty is important.

Do you mind telling who are your 'offical sources' ie your resellers ? Not all of us need the car charger you see and do not want to pay extra.

Thanxs

Eastgear has already stated (see page 1 of this thread) that Memory World is not an official reseller.

Is a price comparsion wrong ? you did not answer me :)

Also, waiting for his reply on whether can buy without the charger and at what cost.

Maybe you/he can then tell us which are the 'offical resellers' then so that if we want to claim servicing if we bought from other shops, we will be allowed too.

Maybe you also can highlight or give some info also if it is true that we cannot trust parallel imports on the following. All these just assumptions?
" 1) They have no direct contacts with the manufacturer and hence servicing will go through a 3rd party which may be lengthy, difficult and troublesome.
2) They do not provide the car charger and have no intention of bringing in the car charger or any other additional accessories for the X-Drive II.

Apparently in another thread it is proven that point 4/5 is not true as Memory World's x-drive and bag has the logo.

I believe Eastgear is trustworthy etc ... just asking all these questions coz it seems in his post that we should only get from him... no one else is reliable and can be trusted :)

I didin't want to ask all these but I guess you all started it.... I ask for price comparsion and you say I distributing a thread.

peace !
