hmm... what I wanted to say is that many other manutacturers allow the use of standard mount flash (no TTL of course! but there're very good non-ttl flashes out there), but Minolta requires a "minolta mount" for the flash to even fit the special hotshoe.

Time to clear up the misconceptions methinks :)

Firstly the physical size of a hot or cold shoe mount is governed by an ISO standard and thus the width of the shoe mount and it's clearances internally is a standard.

Pin Connections for Flash unit.

Apart from the ISO standard regarding NON TTL flash shoes there are no other standards.

Each manufacturer has developed their own version of TTL and dedicated flash control, and each manufacturer uses different pin locations on the hot shoe, with one exception that is common to all manufacturers being central contact that is the flash trigger.

Achiever make the TZ-250 flash that is multi dedicated to Nikon, Canon, Olypmus, Pentax, Ricoh and Minolta flash shoes as well as being able to work with the standard non dedicated TTL shoe.

Sunpak and Metz also produced flash units that use interchangable deditated modules for different camera manufacturers.

One thing you need to be aware of is the trigger voltage across the hot shoe, some cameras can't take high voltages and the use of the wrong flash can lead to permanent damage of the camera.

Ian, thanks for the detailed explanation :)

I have a question though: Is Minolta's physical hotshoe mount conforming to ISO standard? Someone tried to buy a flash from me but it couldn't physically fit her Minolta's hotshoe.

wat flash is that? made by minolta or other brands? does the flash u going to sell fit on your Minolta camera?? and wat camera is that??

It's an Achiever flash which fits on a standard hotshoe. I don't have a Minolta camera. This Achiever flash will fit the hotshoe on a camera like Canon G1 though.

yup, if I'm not wrong. there're many people that uses 3rd party auto flash with Canon cameras.

This part I'm not sure. If there's manual or auto mode, there shouldn't be a problem.

Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Seagull, Mamiya, Rollei, etc all have a standard ISO hotshoe. The only difference is the additional contacts (besides the centre one for triggering the flash).

Nikon flashes can be used on Canon cameras. But not the other way. Except in Manual mode. (See how superior and 'open standard' Nikon is now? ;) ) Canon flashes on the other hand cannot work in all but E-TTL, TTL and Manual. So you can't really use it in the other cameras.

I don't think minolta's hot shoe contact has a center contact... its like 4 contacts forming a square...

Didn't know Sigma make Flash also :embrass: . Are they good compare to Vivatar, Mertz & Archievar? Expansive? Look like they can do TTL and also as a slave flash.:)

I got the 3600 at about 250 at CP.
You use it on your Dimage 5??? I thot 3600 is an analog Flash?

After picking up my 5xi from the Service centre (the pretty recep is back), drop by CP to enquire about the Flash. a lady from CP told me that the analog flash like Achiever cannot work with DC. Even the Metz except the Metz 34. I forgot about the diff between analog and digital flash. Look like I have to buy 2 diff flashes. MEt CK and Redawn. Redawn told me that only certain analog flash can work with DC like Vivitar. Didn't know flash can be so complicated!

Dimage 5 uses ADI flash metering. For Minolta Dimage 5 hotshoe, you can use these external Minolta flash units :
• Program Flash 3600HS(D)
• Program Flash 5600HS(D)
• Macro Twin Flash 2400
• Macro Ring Flash 1200
Hi Ninja, what is ADI metering for Minolta?

Pai seh... 3600HS(D) lah... lazy to type the HS(D)....

Analog, digital flash? If there's a sync connection (on your camera), be it PC cord or hotshoe and the trigger voltage of the flash is not that high, lots of flashes can work with digital cameras. I've used Achiever and other Metz flash and they worked fine.

"digital" flash might refer to slave flash units.

TTL : flash fire, flash bouce back into the lens, with enough light, flash cut off

ADI TTL : flash fire, flash bounce back, camera adjust the aperature accodinly, mirror close down, flash cut off.

New ADI Flash Metering
When the 3600HS(D) or 5600HS (D) flash is combined with Minolta's new AF lenses with distance encoder and the Dynax 7, it offers newly developed ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering. The ADI flash metering incorporates guide number control into Minolta's superior TTL 4-segment flash metering, further enhancing flash metering performance. With the ADI flash metering, precise exposure is available virtually regardless of the background conditions or the subject reflectance. The 3600HS(D) fires a pre-flash, the returned reflection from the subject is interpreted by the 14-segment Honeycomb-pattern cell, and the data is factored in the calculation of final flash output, further enhancing the precision in flash photography.

The Dimage series use the new ADI flash metering method.

Extract from www.minolta.com.sg :
High-performance flash systems
The DiMAGE digital cameras both feature a bulit-in flash with ADI flash metering. Furthermore, each can be customized using a variety of flash systems. The powerful Program Flash 5600HS (D) and the 3600HS(D) also offer ADI flash metering, and include other versatile functions such as auto power zoom. The Macro Twin Flash 2400 provides flexible lighting for nature macro photography*, and the New Macro Ring Flash 1200 produces shadowless lighting-ideal for medical and scientific uses.
The Macro Flash Controller is required for either macro flash unit.
Thanks Ninja! That is very informative...

I C. Yah, my C2040 has flash sync connection but is Oly propriotry format so have to buy the $90 cable someting"CB04" like Tweek.

I have checked out the Metz website referred by you. The MEtz 32-C2 use SCA3302 for Minolta and SCA3002 for Oly C2040 with some "CB01" cable. I wonder if this cable is cheapper. What is this SCA thing? Is the SCA the slave trigger since the spec of Metz 32-C2 doesn't mention slave flash function? Look like the SCA3302 can do ADI as well.
