Borrow this thread ;)

Planned to get a 20mm F2.8 from ebay. Price is hitting USD 300 mostly. Unless wait for seller without reserve pricing else mostly getting a 17-35mm F2.8 - F4. Need a wide lens for oversea trip as for landscape. Using SLR, hopes 17mm still ok in most case. :)

Not advisable to get prime for wide angle from my personal opinion for the following reasons:
1) You may be limited from where you can shoot. Eg. at the edge of a cliff.
A WA zoom therefore allows you to crop off distracting elements in your picture while you are limited to where you are standing.

When using a prime, you usually have to move back and forth because of the limited focal length. This is the bane or boon for portraiture/photo journalists who use prime (depending on how you see it).

2) You don't need the speed (wide aperture) of a prime as you'll be shooting at F13 and above.

Sure, landscape photographers using MF use prime, but remember that MF don't have zoom lens. These guys therefore drive around a lot to find that vantage point to shoot.

Also remember that when using MF/LF, these guys can afford to crop cos their film is so huge compared to 35mm.

A prime is usually more useful as a portrait or photojournalism because of its speed, shallow depth of focus and fixed optical length.

I'm a D7 user too. The digital craze had 1 advantage for film users. It brought about the advent of more affordable WA lens in the market. I would never have gotten the 17-35mm before the digital craze, not just because it was not available back then, but the affordable equivalent was the Tokina and the feedback I get from my friend is not too pleasant (re: barrel distortion at its shortest optical length). The Sigma equivalent has such a wide filter thread that only a rear filter was possible, never a front filter. So suddenly Tamron and KM has a 17-35mm which are not in the G lens price range, so I was spoilt for choice. Better still, the reviews of both lens were great! :)
