Milky Way Galaxy photographed in Singapore recently.

On 19 May 2013, George, a newcomer to astronomy but not to photography, took photos of the clear night sky at Marina Barrage.

After stacking the photos and post-processing it, to his amazement, the Milky Way was captured among the stars. He posted it to the Singapore Astronomy Forums (SingAstro) and got confirmation that it was indeed the Milky Way galaxy.

With his kind permission, I did some additional basic post processing of it in photoshop. This is the result:

Such an amazing shot is incredibly difficult to achieve in Singapore due to massive light-pollution and general absence of very clear skies. Even when such a night occurs, this thicker part of the galaxy may not have risen or in too low a position for a good shot at it. The slightest haze may also render it invisible even to cameras.

George did not see the galaxy with his own eyes on that night. It was only "visible" via long exposure photography + stacking of images + post-processing. But nonetheless it was there.

For more info and backstory about this shot, you may read my blog at:

Wow! thanks George and Astrosg for sharing. amazing shot!

Just to note... What he saw is just one part of the galaxy, not the whole galaxy. ;)

Astro.SG, are you an educator with Science Centre Singapore (SCS) under their Education Programmes (EP) Division, Physical Sciences (PS) Department?

That is correct! It is impossible to photograph the whole Milky Way from Earth since we can only see it edge-on. :)

No I am not. Not affiliated to any scientific/educational/astronomical organisation in Singapore. Are they hiring? :)

"The candidate should possess a degree in ...". Oops. I don't need to read further. :) Thanks for the info though. Hope they will find a good person to promote Science at the Science Centre.
