Just some opinion needed here though...

Since we know the limitation of E-P1 known for its slow focus and the GF1 for its lack of built-in IS.

Would it make a good combination if we wed the E-P1 body to Panasonic 20mm F1.7? Would you get a system that is almost ultra fast (1.7 combined with IS will yield additional 3 stop that could be equivalent to the spped at Aperture 1.4) and will that solve the E-P1 slow Auto Focus?

The Panasonic 20mm f1.7 is quite a good lens actually. So you get higher image quality.

Would you get a system that is almost ultra fast (1.7 combined with IS will yield additional 3 stop (by the way, its 4 stops IS on the Pen, brother, not 3) that could be equivalent to the spped at Aperture 1.4)

Huh? I.S. makes the hole bigger? I don't think so. It only makes shooting speeds improvement, meaning, if your handhold speed based on the 20mm lens is 1/15, then 4 stops IS on the Pen gives you the ability to shoot at 1/15 - 1/8 - 1/4 - (1/2). Which means you can shoot at 1/2 second, with the assistance from IS, you can yield the same stability (almost) shooting at 1/15 (in theory). But this DOES NOT MEAN that Mohd Ali the boxer who has Parkinson's Disease can have a new career as a photographer... he simply shakes too much.

Nothing beats learning proper camera handling... students of mine have "handed up homework" shooting up to 2 seconds handheld on a regular DSLR. There is simply no technology other than buying a steady cam rig to help you. (not really too, maybe help in video recording not stills).

and will that solve the E-P1 slow Auto Focus?

Actually, your answer is buying a DSLR more than a Pen. Maybe one of those Nikon/Canon low-light, super high ISO performer cameras.

And by the way, the difference between the Olympus 17mm pancake and the more pricey Panasonic 20mm panacake is only a mere 2/3 stop difference. You don't really get super thin bokeh or a dramatic improvement in shutter speeds.

since when is f1.7 and f2.8 a difference of 2/3 stop.........?????

Yah... must be the age... ha ha ha... 1 and 1/3 stop... Thanks for pointing this out.

maybe not quite on topic of what m43 setups are hot, but could still be on topic as to what m43 system users are using.

As for me, I went towards legacy manual focus lens:
m4/3: GH1 + 14-140 kit,
FD lenses: 24/2, 28/2, 35/2, 50/1.4, 85/1.2, 70-210/2.8-4.0

E-P1 slow focus ... hmm ... but the GF1 also has slow focus. It is just slightly faster than E-P1, IMHO, insignificant really, compared to cameras made to handle fast action. Heck, even friends with top DSLR cameras still complain about theirs. Technique is still important, quick reaction too.

All is not lost of course with E-P1 or GF1. Thousands of people can get action shots with their slow compact cameras. If they can do it, we people here who spend time talking and reading about cameras should be able to do it too.

This is the same mentality of people buying a 1.5l or 1.6l car. Engine capacity does not make a difference, everything else about the build does.

m4/3 market is boomtown now for camera industry. like netbook liddat, its the next growth area in laptop industry.

Only EP-1 with G1 kit lens for now...:embrass:

For birding i use an FD 400mm F4.5 SSC mounted through adapter..

For wide i just use the canon EFS 10-22 mounted through an EOS to M4/3 adapter.. the DOF seems to be more than enough with the smaller sensor even at F3.5

hope oly and pana comes out a good range of fast and affordable range of primes soon

The FD 85F1.2L? how does it perform?

i felt it abit too long so went to pick up an FL 55F1.2 instead.

XC, if you're like me from the non-AF days, the primes are here already.

If you still want AF, then set the lens below to focus at 1m. Now you can shoot wide open at f5.6 and everything beyond 1m would be in focus. Stop it down and everything from .3m will be sharp. No need to focus just frame :bsmilie:

And why not, since everybody seems to be complaining about slow AF. Besides, I think the retro look is gorgeous

OTHER...NONE!

NOTHING has motivated me to buy such a camera, having bought my E-330 two years ago and my E-300 five years ago.

The only small camera I bought recently was a used TOUGH, but that was for the underwater (UW) feature, which you can't do with an m4/3 unless you get a UW case. If I buy a new camera, it has to do something MORE than my current camera does (i.e. live view with the E-330, or UW with the TOUGH), to convince me to spend the money when there's nothing wrong with my current camera(s).

Being small just isn't a big enough feature for me!

Sometimes I wished I have that discipline like you to know "enough is enough". Would have had the extra cash for the Aston Martin I always wanted.

I already have more cameras than I know what to do with. In addition to the FourThirds I have a C-700 and C-750, and an SW/TOUGH...plus I have a pair of dedicated P&S that I use for my 3D photography (they are always mounted on a bar the proper distance apart).

But personally I don't like to replace something unless it is broken or really out of date. The laptop I use is SEVEN years old; although I'm considering getting a lighter one that can also be used as a tablet, but it will already be more than two years old when I buy it.

As for the Aston Martin, I grew up with rich friends and one of their fathers did drive a late 70's Aston Martin Vantage, so I did get a few rides in that! :blah:

Its wisdom, that much I recognise.

Buying out of gearlust over the last ten years did give me an opportunity to own and use all the glass and camera bodies Olympus has to offer, including their point and shoot cameras. But at the same time, I know deep inside, I have only needed to build a focal length that is required for serious shooting and I am quite happy that it is happening.

And you lucky man... the 70s Vantage is an awesome car.

I may have to eat my words. If that Panasonic 3D lens is any good and gives decent results (although the lenses are too close together), I may have to buy a micro FourThirds camera after all, since it doesn't work for regular 4/3.

I'd prefer having a single camera for 3D rather than two cameras which I use now.

As there have been newer models released since this poll, therefore this poll is already outdated and should be closed. Thanks to all who have shared your thoughts and clicks in this thread. Moving on...
