Del_CtrlnoAlt, thanks for your reply :)

Does anybody here using external flash? If so what brand? Sony one or third party is better? The most important thing is the value for money.

I think I'll need it during my uncle's wedding on February.

Hope to see reply soon :)

External flash is okay but you need to adjust according to the flash power. Did you see a small little thingy on the right handside of the lens which indicate "ACC"? That is for meant for Sony external flash unit only wire. It is not meant for other flash unit.

However you are still the horse shoe with other flash unit but need adjustment. Normally when you look at the SLR hotshoe there is a few little holes connected to each other. That is for TTL Flash unit which need not adjust if you use TTL system. Sony has found out that it was troublesome connecting a wire, so the new F828 hotshoe has been improved by using the same technology as the SLR. So the F828 is wire free but not F717. Too bad!

So actually for the F717, you have to purchase the Sony flash unit. I think it's a little expensive but well it's worth the money as when you set to Program mode, nothing needs to be adjusted. Just shoot. If I am not wrong, CP is selling about $200-$300++. Not to sure about the price but I think it's around there!

Don't forget you can use other flash unit and it does trigger the flash but you need to adjust each time you shoot. With Sony as I mention earlier just plugged in and shoot! Sometimes Sony sucks but they try to monopolise the market with their own product.

Oh yes! Sony flash does not swivel and unable to rotate.

So there you have it again!

Hi all... :)

The lense hood really comes in handy when shooting in the direction of sunlight or strong lense. Prevents ghosting and lense flare. Not to forget it helps to prevent the fingers from touching my UV filter, which in turn will leave finger prints... :p If you are interested, can consider getting it from Ebay, still cheap with shipping vectored in... Hard to find in Singapore... :)

On the issue of wide angle converter, well really depends on whether do you have a need for it. Currently I have the Sony VCL-MHG07A *cheapo one* :embrass:, but frankly, I have used less than 5 times since I bought it back in August. Reason being it's an add on... Need to take it out from the bag and screw it onto the lense mount to use. Too time consuming... With a 0.7 multipler, you will get roughly 28mm...

One point on the teleconverter, it's huge and heavy, so unless you have a very good tripod and head, it's very difficult to get the sharp images. Not that the lense is not good, but it's the slightest shakes that will blur the picture... Ask the owners of the Olympus C-7x0 series of cameras. It's extremely difficult to shoot at full 10x optical handheld... :)

Now to the flash... I'm using a Metz 32MZ-3. Very happy with the output it produces. Beats the onboard flash hands down. Better skin tones and greater range... :) One thing I like about this flash head is that it not only can do bounce but also swivel. Why swivel you might ask? Well... great for bounce flash when shooting portrait!!! :D

One last thing... a 180 degrees wide angle is call a fisheye lense. Though it covers 180 degrees, the distortion is extremely high. Thus unless you are trying to achieve this fisheye effect, I find little use for such a lense... :)

One more thing... Metz do produce an adapter for it's series of flash heads that is compatible with the F717... has an flash sync cord to plug into the ACC port... :)

Lastly, Sony don't have TTL flash... Not even with it's original flash head. It's simply adjusting the flash head to the aperture set on the camera. :)

Hope this helps... :embrass:

Just another newbie here... :) Still a long way to go up the learning curve... :embrass:

arikevin, the Metz 32MZ-3 is selling for around $180 ~ $200 depending on where you asking. A fellow CS'er, jasonwcs, conducted a MO for this flash for $220, incl of a few accessories, quite some time back. You might want to check with him... :)

Price wise it's definitely more value for money cos it's about the same price as the HVL-F1000 but with swivel... The HVL-F32x cost a bomb and the F717 dun fully utilize the function cos it uses a standard hotshoe not the dedicated one on the F828... :(

Edwin, thanks for your reply. Where can I get it in local camera shop?

Guys, do you normally shoot with Manual Focus or Auto Focus? I m quite fed-up with manual focus now because:

1. The subject is blur and not as sharp on what I had in mind when I was taking the shoot.

2. It takes forever for me to focus because I don't want the picture appears to be soft and blurred.

I really need advice. Take a look at my duck race pics and u'll understand. Click the signature and it'll lead me to my photo album.

Thanks.
