Memories of Hokkaido

have u heard anything about the ainu people/culture in hokkaido?

My first visit to Hokkaido was in Sep this year. The nice pics here (compared to mine) makes me wonder whether its the same Hokkaido I visited. :)

Though question was not directed at me, just to share some info I got from my tour leader: Some literature indicated Ainu people may have descended from the Vikings. To me, they were a rather oppressed group as the Japanese emperor (some time ago) put a mandate that they have to marry a Japanese, in a bid to 'dilute' their culture.

i'm intrigued by their appearance and the clothes they wear. i read that there is some ainu restaurants that came up after the discrimination against them is challenged over the decade, and probably some museums too. if there is more, it would even be more interesting. these people are indigenous people in modern day northern japan, and are japanese citizens, but in a way not japanese as they do not share a similar origin, culture or history with the japanese. what i'm interested in, rather than reading or hearing about it (e.g. from your tour guide), is there such locations visited and worth photography?

Hi zoossh, as part of the research on my itinerary I did come across the Ainu and a certain Ainu village in Asahikawa / Shiraoi Kotan which is pretty touristed. I unfortunately did not plan for it due to time constraints.

However we do see bits and pieces of Ainu in a settlement on Noboribetsu Bear Farm hilltop.
Noboribetsu itself is derived from their Ainu language I think.

My book is *donated* over to my in-laws :bsmilie: Will try to get a shot!
What I can only do is to bother u to come up with another print for the rest of my shots when I am done with the compilation ;)

Ryan

No bother at all, most welcome to print another great book.

How I missed the "standing soba" in a cold icy morning, a super huge Sapporo Ramen that’s good for lunch and dinner serving. Must go again to recharge my battery.

So glad you are back (filling up yr thread). Soon will be changing thread cat. - with baby photos?! Hm..posting your wedding pics?

You always manage to present the simple things (around us) in a beautiful way, not glamorous but feel "connected". Reality isn't so beautiful....

Thx Esther :D

Baby not so fast la haha!

:) Photography being a visual expression, people may view, interpret and represent a common subject differently. But I do not think I have the sensitivity to bring out in a stronger way what I felt when I was there yet. Thats why I look forward to have another trip to redeem myself ! ( other than the food huhuhr )

Hot chicks. These little hatchlings are smaller than half the length of my little finger nail.

( Retrospectively should have repositioned them to look at the camera )

just a suggestion. i think if you try to neutralise the color balance (redness), the yellow may become more vibrant.

em... his wedding pics surely not taken by himself rite? so style would be different.

Taking pics of events is really not my cup of tea, not to even mention taking self portraits!

That is good suggestion. Overcooked the warmth.

Glass making hut. Interior lighting was not the brightest, taken through glass window.

Thanks for sharing. I enjoy viewing the photos. Hope that I will have time and money to visit the place.

Thx Phototime for ur comments.

Here is a documentary take of the interior. Left my bag and tripods at a corner of the shop because i was worried i might just knock over something really expensive.

We stopped by a small restaurant run by father and son in Rokugo, a short walk from the Glass forest - A Ramen stall that was recommended by the tourist information booth at Furano. ( Tomikawa ) - or rather, the only few shops opened at that time.

( Look for 77 - a snapshot of a useful map that i got locally - see pdf link for full map )

The ambience was lovely, cozy and exudated a local flavor. There was a paper cutting on the wall with some TV star visiting them previously. Very tasty ramen, even better than the one that we had at the touristy populous Ramen Alley at Susukino.

Met several interesting people who came for dinner, and of course one young japanese couple that had a few drops and drove down the shop's outdoor umbrella. We heard a bump and I went out with the older chef to see what happened. The guy drove off, too oblivious of what happened, and it was actually pretty heavy for the two of us to reposition the metallic umbrella post back in the light drizzle.

I asked them if I could take a shot of them. Lighting was not the best, no flash used

I have always liked this kind of store/shops. The last time when we were at Furano(ski) , the Ramen restaurant was run by a single obasan; had very interesting decor and a old stove in the centre of the restaurant.
Nice pic. totemo genki desu.

What do you mean by your camera dying? Buying an L lens doesnt mean your camera wont die; if what you meant by die is by the battery being sucked off.

What you can do is to stick the camera close to your body at all times. After you shoot, hold it close to your body.

This can hopefully buy you more juice for your batteries.

As mentioned by Pokka, you can keep extra batteries in an inside pocket kept warm by your body heat. When the battery you are using starts to fade, change it for the nice warm one. - warming up the cold battery will restore it, and you can swap it when you need to.
