Memories of Hokkaido

Cool! thanks for your itinary on page one! Will be very helpful for me in any coming trip.

You must be very fast with your hands - able to manually set aperture, set shutter  AND focus BEFORE the gulls fly away, whew! ;p

Darn good ah you

I will most likely use P mode

Oh when manual i meant the setting of aperture / shutter speed. The focusing was AF. The 70-200mm is pretty fast at that.

No problem :) I provided the skeleton framework of where I went. I will try to refurbish more details in my own website. Can pm me if any queries pertaining to my itinerary

15 min journey from port of Otaru to the JR station. We took a bus from JR Otaru to the foot of Mount Tenguyama ( cannot miss the station, drops next to it ). We got the bus schedule earlier on from the hotel staffs. We managed to reach the top just before sunrise. Retrospectively we should have went abit earlier - the peak actually has a trekking path > 1km in distance ( undulating ) bringing you different views of Otaru and surroundings at different facets of the peak, which we could not have finished.

There is a restaurant , with their roof being the viewing platform for the direction facing Otaru ( I think it faces north, the sunset on your left ). The restaurant has seats with huge glass windows for viewing the nightscape - which is actually very impressive. After I think 7pm ( or was it 8pm ?? ) they will wack a surcharge on top of ur bill - presumably because you now can see the famous night view of Otaru with the city lights. Of course the only English speaking lady staff told me before hand so I managed to clear the bill before the levy. You can also see strings of lights from other nearby cities like distant stars.

A father sitting on the slope of Mount Tenguyama facing Otaru city in sundown, signals his son to come join him at the *prime* seat. There is actually no stopping you from falling all the way down if u managed to tumble down this slope. Taken with a 70-200mm, retrospectively I should have taken it with a wider angle lens to give abit more space over the city background.

beautiful photos, really impressed by your travel photos, candids is one thing i always missed out in travels. I always have this problem of transporting gears and luggages for long days travel especially moving from point to point everyday, how do you do that? not to mention all the shopping goods haha.

Besides that, now i really see what the tilt shift can do with that amazing bokeh. great sharing!

Thx Benosaurous. Glad u liked my shots so far. I am only less than a fifth thru my pics

My gf has one luggage for her stuffs, I have a huge backpacking bag for my stuffs, and I got another big suitcase for our purchases.

I usually lug my camera ard my neck and my lenses in my Offtrail waist pouches.
My luggages will be pulled in a suitcase. Some of the older JR trains have pretty narrow doors as well. ( I probably get a thinner suitcase for my nxt visit )

If I am holding the umbrella for us, or i am helping carrying shopped items, then I am out of action :bsmilie: Take a break and enjoy too

I like the nite shot....#12

Thx comix. more to come

天狗山 Tenguyama.

Often quoted as the one place that is surprisingly undervisited in Otaru. If you are on a package tour this will probably not be on their itinerary. Even if on a free and easy tour most people would want to take the Otaru canal nearing sunset for the beautiful hues and reflections - which of course i missed.

This was taken shortly after we got up the mountain from the cable, with the tripod mounted on the grass slope The sun was not possible to catch because it was too far to the left, obscured by the immediate rising trees and foilages. The lines on the right representing the cable car lines with station at the summit on the immediate right.

There is a little map on the top outlining the little checkpoints that you can visit, as well as a pretty long path to walk around the area for different perspectives. We stopped by here to take a few pictures of ourselves, and sat on the grassy slope to inoculate ourselves with the beautiful surrealism and let it run in our veins. I felt like a new person already . .

Here you can see an overview of city of Otaru with the ports.
A panorama of 9 shots in all.

Taken from probably the NEE direction ( ports face east )
By this time much of the sun has crossed the horizon, and shadowed by the mountain,
taken with a slightly longer exposure

Initially wanted to keep this picture for my own documentary purposes, but here is a quick comparison for friends who pmed me on the miniaturization effect. It is part of the tilt created by the lens, and in the case of #79

Untilted would look something like this :
( a pan made by 6 shots as compared to #79 and taken much earlier, but you can roughly know where the selective focus went to )

comparing against #79

The selective focus effect can be mimicked to varying degree by Photoshop as some have previously demonstrated.

Taking an uber long JR ride from Otaru to Hakodate - my longest in Hokkaido
( No direct JR rail, you have to take from Otaru to Sapporo, then change JR from Sapporo to Hakodate - the rail schedules are pretty on the spot, me and my friends who visited Hokkaido has made some pretty tight transfer schedules )

Otaru has much earlier rail schedules not visible on the JR rail timetable at the tourist information counter in Sapporo. If you are at Otaru do check with the local JR station

Too bored took some shots of passengers around me

Another great series Ryan. Keep posting.

thanks pat33.

Hakodate, the 3rd city we visited in Hokkaido, one of the southern most cities of Hokkaido
The ride from Otaru to Hakodate took us the morning, and we reached in the afternoon.
This was the start of our rainy / cloudy saga. Aimed to go up Mount Hakodate to view their famous night scape but marred by weather.

Most of the people would be coming from rail up to Hakodate before proceeding northwards.

Transport in Hakodate is mainly the electric tram.
We stayed in Hotel Chocolat, at least a 15 min walk from JR ( underestimated the walking time ) , but we opted to take the electric tram to walk a shorter distance

Rain Rain Rain ..

Passengers waiting at the electric tram stop. I took the opportunity to take them when the tram was slowly advancing ( at the preceeding traffic light ) and they kinda looked at my way

Thx mmmel. Sure thing :bsmilie:

The star shape Goryokaku can be seen from the Goryokaku observatory tower. Just gotta pay a small some for entrance. Easily reachable by an electric tram ride.

The pentagon was too wide for me even with my 12-24mm on the DX sensor. 4 composite shots taken to include all parts of the stars.

A view from the top of the Goryokaku Tower, some 60 m above.
( Not as tall as the TV Tower of Sapporo but tall enough to command a nice view )
