Pretty! Thanks for the alternate view :)

Winter view here, although I didn't do it justice :

Otaru is very pretty and romantic in winter!

Hey nuts thanks for adding your input and linking your previous thread!

Otaru Yuki-akari-no-michi is the reason why i wanna revisit Otaru in winter!
I saw a local poster of Otaru taken with the lights in the water at the hotel and I was like .. OMG .. need to go back

Actually there issn't much to the canal for most of the time. But there are other parts of Otaru that might make the whole visit worthwhile.

Yup, the Canal is just one of the attractions of Otaru. Otaru is also musical box heaven :)

Similarly, lots of other beautiful places in Hokkaido besides Otaru... Hmm... I'll change my prev statement to "Hokkaido is very pretty and romantic in winter"! ;)

there's this cream puff shop with a very long queue within eye view of the music box shop. go early and grab first. very fast sold out.:thumbsup:

a cafe diagonally opposite the music box shop lets you keep the cup your order of coffee or tea came in. there's a washing area and boxes for you to pack up the cups and saucers.

I see the both of u still miss the place very much. I visited the music box museums and alot of other shops and eateries, but that will be just too many pics to put up on this thread.

Nuts you are driving me nuts about going to Hokkaido in Winter again! :bsmilie: ( haha sorry I couldn't help it )

A break from the Ushio Festival pics. Here is the last picture of the Otaru Canal i took.
Again a panorama of 4 shots taken from the bottom footpath. So very jam packed during the festival. The intense colors was the lighting they placed during the festival.

( My gf reminded me to take a picture of the little girl performer with the fan )
Should have placed the shot abit more to the left to not include the other person at the background. Probably too psyched up by the roaring and drumming.

You managed to catch the tanabatas! Great stuff... Japanese festivals are such a joy to see and experience.

The atmosphere is very hyped up. lots of drumming, everyone cheering.
Very nice. Feel like running into the crowd and start cheering on as well!

Can I ask if this shot was taken handheld? What's the settings for this shot?

Absolutely adore your series....

Hope to see more.

Hi Pokka.

I do not have the individual files with me at the moment, will try to pm ya the settings when I get back. They were taken on a tripod , with cable release ( i usually fix the cable release to my camera whenever i shoot from tripod ). The pictures were subsequently stitched with photomerge in PS, no correction of distortion.

This little boy seemed abit moody. I think maybe because his vantage point is too
low while sitting in a pram, view obscured

A lovely little girl sitting on her dad's shoulders. Best seat for best view.

Lots of gulls at the Otaru port.
I got better luck with shooting them in Toya though.

Ushio Festival. Stage performers at the later part of the day after the temple staff procession paraded to the port and when everyone has sorta settled.

Lots of children performance as well. We did not stay for the ritual dances by the temple staffs cause it was getting late and we took a bus up to the foot of Tenguyama mountain

Wah so sharp and not underexposed, considering the background. Auto/P/Manual? Lens?

Also love your #72. The expression is so well captured - half enjoying his ice cream and half in reminescience about the festival.:thumbsup:

Thx two200. It was taken with a 70-200mm, manual ( more like i took a few shots and got a comfortable setting after that ) , the skies were pretty cloudy that day so it was not too bad actually :)

Settling down and watching dance and stage performance.
Actually the amount of people behind them is ... huge

Another take. I was walking along their pasa malam at their port, eating finger food and stopping by looking at the gulls. This was the about the last shot before i left for Tenguyama.
Again with a 70-200mm uncropped. The gulls often fly so low sometimes 70mm is not wide enough!

You must be very fast with your hands - able to manually set aperture, set shutter  AND focus BEFORE the gulls fly away, whew! ;p

Darn good ah you

I will most likely use P mode
