Hi people,

Had horrid pics the last time i visited marina barrage happily 2nd day into the ownership of my D90. Promised myself to revisit to do the place and the camera justice. Improved i think but still lacking in comparision to zola70's test shot with his nikon D5000. Will seek to improve.

Been hit by the poor economy as well so trying to give myself some encouragement in forming a storyline with my pics : Trying to tell myself rest is impt in such a time, to gain energy and move in the direction charted, possibly dramatically different from one well travelled. If timing to move is not right, look for comfort and joy in things familiar, dun get bitten by the despair bug and things will be fine. ;)

Things gets more wordy from here so advance thanks to those who take time to see.

TAKE A BREAK

If you are tired,
take a break.
Seats aplenty for you to take.

If you are tired,
rest your feet,
Else your destination you wun be able to reach.

If you are tired,
just sit yourself down,
To go further you need to rest now.

If you are tired,
Take a look around you,
perhaps you might see things to make you new.

If your are tired,
take a break,
this could be the difference that will make.

CROSSING THE RUBICON

Sometimes we need to cross the rubicon,
In the search of a brand new dawn.

Caesar did it to build an empire,
All I want is to just relight my fire.

The rubicon is not a sea but just a creek,
A symbol of things we dare not speak.

Crossing it is all in the mind,
When you set the course all will be fine.

So take a rest and set your sights,
Catch your breathe and look left and right.

Mayhap’s a bridge over troubled water you will see,
Cross it and in starry starry land you’ll be.

FINDING YOUR SHANGRI LA

Shangri la this definitely is not,
Singapore is way too hot.

Our city is a FINE city yes it is,
Who’s to complain when we live in lawful bliss.

Prices are up and wages down,
Is that reason enough for a big big frown.

Bad things are aplenty if we nit and pick,
Pushing ourself into the doldrums where all is bleak.

Just like an underexposed photograph,
It might not be bad due to the photographer’s craft.

Oh yes we can blame it on the camera,
But is it the camera or our endeavour.

Push away the gloom and doom,
Sweep it away with the proverbial broom.

Look at all that’s good amidst the bad,
Things will definitely be better a tad.

Oh things wun be better immediately,
But at least one will maintain one’s sanity.

In keeping the right frame of mind,
Our own Shangri La we can find.

Well thanks for the viewing if you got so far, also this seem not a conventional way to share pics, apologises to the mod if this is not inline, please let me know to rectify.

Thanks.

i like the 1st pic for its simplicity and 2nd pic for the effects. did u photoshop to get the star like effect??

Hi siimplicity,

Thanks for the comments. :D

I did not use any filter nor photoshop except cropping. Seems that the 50mmF1.8 lens on the D90 churns out this effect on a regular basis for me :bsmilie:

This is a variation of photo 1, different composition, does this works for you too? ;p This one i photoshopped away a fire hydrant on the left hand side as i felt its too distracting haahah

hmm.. i somehow prefer the 1st one. i find the tall pillars in #4 a little distracting. hahah.. =))

Me too hahaha ;p

Oh bout the starburst effect, i started another thread asking the experts, their comment was that if small aperature i.e big f number, point source of light will generally result in starburst effect.

No one have answered me on how come i cannot duplicate the effect on 18-105mm lens though.

 Good snap....and good writing too.

Glad u like it :)

Hi Marcellus,

Thanks. Then the efforts were not mine hahaha as its not deliberate, and actually i am trying to find out how to get a sharp pic without the starburst effect too =)

My apologies, but the starburst effects is too cheesy & dated.

Hi Caspere,

Honestly i agree hahaha ;) any advise on how not to do it as its supposed caused by small aperture size.

And i do think the pic complement the poem i hope =)

If i'm not wrong, 50mm f1.8 have 7 straight diaphragm blades and 18-105mm have 7 rounded diaphragm blades. Maybe the rounded diaphragm blades is the answer to why you can't duplicate the effect. Not sure. :)

Nice , luv pic 2

Hi numnumball,

Thanks. Great it works for you!

Hi synchroni,

Thanks for the reply. :D

YUpz someone had guided me on the diaphragm blade being the key to the starburst effect already. But think i am still a bit biased against the kit lens haha ;p

the kit lens would still be good so long as you work towards its strength...

for example, i think it would make a decent travel lens if you're not a fan of UWA lens.
i would say this is a cheaper travel lens over the 16-85mm vr.
coupled with VR, somehow it should be more usable than the 18-135mm in night shooting.
of course its aperture value will never beat those of primes.
