You shouldn't even be touching your focusing screen with anything.

Hehehe...we used to use 6 or 8B graphite pencils as well as chinagraph on medium format screens, and china graph and lining tape to mark out 4x5" and 8x10" focusing screens. On glass-lined backs, we just used chinagraph, but preferred the skinny-tipped oil based markers. Yeah, we MARKED out focusing screens for particular shoots. :bsmilie: OOPS, I forgot. For 35mm and small formats, we just used 0.3 or 0.5 mechanical pencil to mark our screens.

You can scratch up a screen and the very most is, if you like massacre the screen, you won't be able to see much :bsmilie: (doesn't affect the AF though), and the metering might be off a bit but just EV a bit lah. :devil:
