Haaaa, never thought KRW is so funny. I need to use a 200mm (at least!) and run 5m (at least again!) away from the model to get a head and shoulders shot. Next time all portrait shooter should add a loudhailer in their kit too.

what he says is true though, most professional portrait shooters that i see doing what seems to be head and shoulders shot are using extreme telephoto :dunno:

and come to think of it, most good shots i have seen with the 85mm f/1.2 seem to be more than just head and shoulders

and i did mention earlier that the model's face seems very puffed up than it does elsewhere

Had a shoot with Mandy & Zoe today. Will be posting in separate threads.
C&C definately welcomed.

Wonderful model to work with, easy going and patient. Beautiful eyes and features.

I think a close up of Mandy in #2 would be good, her pose is nice :)

Hopefully people commend your works based on your photo taking skills and not because of your lens haha!

Thanks bro, will take note of that.

Haha, I dunno if I got any skills or not leh.. :(

#2 has nice bokeh, colour and good light at model, dress and background, model a bit larger but i think it is fine. selecting the right lens is important and work within that constrain. 85mm is not a suitable len for head plus shoulder. yes, you can shoot with any lens, just not flattering. i read 85mm is suitable for full body shots. give 200mm a try for head shots. models dont always hold their heads straight up. 200mm will compress the head with the body. if the head, shoulders, body and legs are in a straight line, i think it will be very boring. compression or exaggeration, you decide.

anybody can get any lens (50mm, 85mm), set to maximum aperture and shoot at minimum focusing distance or as long as the head and shoulder fill the frame. bokeh will be there. the ears will disappear, the nose stick out. it is not skill, it is science.
