Not as bad as Chelsea losing to Barnsley. Another giant slaying act by a minnow who would probably go on to win the FA Cup. Dreams are made of these in FA Cup competition.

The ref was really inconsistent during the match with his refereeing, and allowed all sorts of challenges early in the game (including the Ronaldo penalty that was not). Later on, he was super ultra anal and was whistle happy for SOME challenges.

The Ronaldo penalty chance was clearly an attempt to eliminate the player from the scene, not clear the ball from the scene. Bad call by ref.

The Pompey penalty was a soft one. Baros was in the clear. Kuszack did NOT grab his leg at all. Baros knee hit the stopper's face and he lost his balance and fell. The intent to bring the player down was definitely absent.

Lets put the loss to Portsmouth behind us and move forward. There is always another FA Cup to look forward to next season. At least, with the loss, we got less matches to play and can concentrate on the EPL and CL. The away match against Derby is on 15 Mar and we can look forward to regaining the pole position after the gunners were held to a goalless draw by Wigan. Hurray!!!!

Coleman had a deal set up for Foster before Saturday's Old Trafford shocker when Edwin van der Sar was injured and Tomasz Kuszczak sent off.

Cup exit will affect season

Amid the frustration of United’s controversial FA Cup quarter final exit to Portsmouth, Sir Alex Ferguson hopes a steely resolve and determination to clinch silverware in the league and in Europe will emerge.

A host of missed chances at Old Trafford ultimately led to the Reds’ downfall, although poor refereeing decisions held United back in a game that appeared set for nothing other than a home win.

The concern is that the defeat, and the circumstances that surrounded it, could affect the rest of United’s season. Conversely, Sir Alex hopes that is the case.

“It has to have an impact,” he said. “The impact is that we’re going to do something about it. “There is a determination and energy from our team that will show itself now.”

United have the Premier League to fight for and a Champions League quarter final to come, and Sir Alex’s hope is that this defeat will galvanise his squad for the rest of the season.

The Reds boss will be keen to discover just how serious Edwin van der Sar's groin injury is. With Tomasz Kuszczak picking up an automatic three-match ban for his sending off, Ben Foster may be called upon for the game against Derby next weekend.

Louis Saha, meanwhile, had been pencilled in to start against Portsmouth but was withdrawn with a knee injury.

yeah ! me long long time Man Utd fan.....but please don't be sore losers and sulk ! Champions are those that can put the ball into the back of the net WITH THAT MANY attempts on goal !
So if they can't even wrap up the game with that many chances, don't blame the ref n the opponents tactics !!! Harry got his right n the Pompey players defended BLOODY well n they took their few chances and they won !

Put that game aside n we should look forward to more exciting games n victories coming ! And as the gunners drew blanks, we shld look wif anticipation to go top !

No fear in Euro draw

Ji-sung Park is confident United can go all the way in the Champions League this season, declaring: "We can beat anyone."

There is a real possibility that Friday’s quarter-final draw could pit United against another English side, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, who progressed on Tuesday at the expense of Inter Milan, also in the hat. But Park doesn't care who the Reds are paired with.

The Korea midfielder told ManUtd.kr: “We don’t mind who we play next. Maybe it would be good for English football if we drew an English team but, for me, it doesn’t matter.

“We don’t worry about the opposition because we have good players and we've shown our quality this season. As long as we concentrate on our performance, we can beat anyone."

Last weekend's frustrating FA Cup defeat to Portsmouth ended United’s chances of winning three trophies this season, but the double is still on and Park believes the Reds’ strength in depth will be key to their chances.

“We have the squad to win any competition,” he said. “In the last few games our starting line-up has been quite different, but we're getting good results so we believe we can win the Premier League and Champions League.”

Sir Alex hails English power

The Premier League is now indisputably leading the way in Europe, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

United are one of four English teams in the hat for Friday’s Champions League quarter final draw (12:00 GMT), along with one side each from Spain, Germany, Italy and Turkey. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are also still involved and Sir Alex believes that demonstrates the quality of English football.

“I think the Premier League is the strongest in Europe,” he told MUTV. “For a spell it was the Spanish league – I remember about seven or eight years ago they had three teams in the semi-finals and Spanish football was really strong, but I think the English game has now reached that level.

“You expect three of the four English teams to be in the semi finals this year, unless they are drawn against each other [in the quarter-finals]. We now have a 40% chance of being drawn against an English team, which is a measure of the quality of this division.”

United have never experienced an all-English tie in the Champions League, but the manager is relaxed about what Friday’s draw has in store, which will also reveal potential semi-finals opponents.

He said: “Once the format changed and three or four teams from each country were allowed into the competition, it was inevitable that they would face each other at some point, so I’m always geared to playing against an English team. It doesn’t matter who we get in the quarter-finals. Knowing who you’ll get in the semi-finals as well is an incentive, but we’ll take what we get.”
