Chelsea confirm Hiddink's temporary appointment

Chelsea have confirmed that Guus Hiddink will take control of the club on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

The 62-year-old Russia coach, who replaces Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari after his sacking on Monday, will meet the Chelsea players later this week.

Chelsea's Russian owner Roman Abramovich made Hiddink his primary target following the club's decision to dismiss Scolari and used his close ties with the Russian FA to broker a deal.

After expressing ''delight'' at agreeing a deal with Hiddink, a statement on the Chelsea website the club said: ''[We] would like to take this opportunity to thank the Russian Football Union for their understanding and cooperation''.

Hiddink will combine his responsibilities with the Russian national team with his role at Chelsea, something he has done in the past with Australia and PSV Eindhoven.

Before the deal was confirmed Hiddink said: ''Abramovich does so much for Russian football that I wanted to do something back.''

The Dutchman is expected to begin his tenure on February 21 with a tough match against third-placed Aston Villa at Villa Park, followed by a clash with Juventus in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Hiddink will attend Chelsea's FA Cup fifth round tie away to Watford on Saturday where he will run the rule over his new team ahead of his appointment.

Commenting on the job ahead Hiddink said: ''It's never enough time to prepare a team in one week but this is an exceptional situation. Chelsea have good players and they should be in top form and that should make my job easier.''

Asked if he intended to bring any assistants with him to Stamford Bridge, the 62-year-old replied: ''Not at this time.''

''I always want to see the situation in the team myself first before making any changes if they have to be made.''

Hiddink, whose contract with Russia runs until the end of the 2010 World Cup, also indicated that he had given little thought to staying at Chelsea beyond the end of the current campaign.

''There are two scenarios: it goes bad and they say 'go back east' or it goes well, but I'm not thinking that far ahead,'' the Dutchman concluded.

Hiddink has never before coached in England and has been out of club management since leaving PSV Eindhoven to take over Australia in 2006.

Hiddink is currently in Turkey with the Russian national side and is likely to fly to England tomorrow, before linking up with his new charges for the first time, probably on Friday.

I think the guus is a very good appointment. Luckly its only temporary at the moment. I rate him as 1 of the best managers around, won with PSV and made S. Korea and the Aussies stronger.

Giggs pens deal to stay until end of 2009-10

Manchester United living legend Ryan Giggs, already their longest serving player of all time, as well as the club's record appearance holder has been rewarded for his recent Indian summer with a new one-year extension to his Manchester United contract.

Giggs has been at United his entire career and is still an important player for them.
Giggs, 35, has been a first-teamer at Old Trafford since 1991 and has scored in 17 straight top division seasons, with his solo goal against West Ham at the weekend being his first of this season. A man-of-the-match showing in last month's 3-0 win over Chelsea, where he played in centre midfield, has been hailed as one of his best performances in his long and glittering career.

United have chosen to retain a player their one-club man and have belied previous rumours that Giggs would be quitting the game at the end of this season. The Welshman said: "I feel fit and I'm enjoying my football more than ever."

He added on his club's official website: "This is an exciting young team and the spirit is great in the dressing room. I want to be a part of that and achieve even more success."

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his professionalism.

"Ryan is a true professional of the game," Ferguson said.

"His lifestyle, the way he looks after himself, his desire to always want to win is a credit to him and also an inspiration to any young kid who wants to become a footballer.

"He is like a young boy in the way that he plays and, although he wants to play every game, he understands that by using his experience when it matters is a benefit to him and the team.

"It would be easy for him to be complacent after all he has achieved but he isn't and that speaks volumes of why the club wanted to extend his services and use that experience."

Damn it..
Giggsy is indeed a legend at Man Utd :cheergal:

Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs, Running down the wing.
Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs, Can do anything.
Feared by the Blues, Loved by the Reds.
Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs.

Hiddink jets in and declares: Chelsea can win title

hiddinkwilkins412.jpg

New Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink flew into London to watch his first training session on Thursday and declared that the Premier League club could still win the title.

The Dutchman, who succeeds ousted Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari and will take control of the Blues until the end of the season, accompanied chairman Bruce Buck out on to the Cobham training ground to watch the main session, led by assistant coach Ray Wilkins.

After meeting with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and director Eugene Tenenbaum Hiddink gave his first interview as Blues boss and intimated that the fourth placed club could catch league leaders Manchester United.

"They are in several races, the FA Cup is there, the Champions League and also the league," the 62-year-old told Chelsea TV.

"There is a 10-point difference but if you look in the past of this league and other leagues as well, some things can happen during the final stages of the championship.

"All the three roads are very important. The next game against Watford, and then Aston Villa and Juventus, and then you go on the path of the Champions League, and that is so attractive. The club has the experience to go to the final.

"I have to live, as soon as possible, in the depth of the club, but I just recently talked to the players for a few minutes in the dressing room this afternoon.

"I am not just here to add to my experience with the club and Premier League, but also I want to see these results as soon as possible.

"The players are very committed, I have seen the training session, but sometimes you can have a little bit different approach to get even more efficiency out of the players.

"That is where I am aiming at and if you add those individuals together and make a team, then everyone can bring a little bit more.

"Not just in commitment. It is too easy to talk commitment because everyone has an obligation to be committed, but in the tactical and the strategic approach during the game. We might gain some profit.

"I worked several years with Alex (at PSV) but I know the players of Chelsea and other clubs as well, I know almost all of the players.

"To be honest I don't know the players from the academy and I see them participating already with the first team which is good. I have to know them better, how they play etc, but generally speaking I know the players."

Wilkins, who will lead the team against Watford in the FA Cup on Saturday, will play an instrumental role in providing Hiddink with information about players during the early part of his tenure.

Hiddink will work with Chelsea as well as continue in his current post as coach of the Russian national team and his dual role is already causing a stir amongst the Sbornaja players.

Russian playmaker Andrei Arshavin, Arsenal's newest recruit, is worried that Hiddink may leave the national team to become Chelsea's full-time manager, which he believes could have disastrous effects on the national team's future.

"For me, the most important thing is that Hiddink doesn't leave the Russian team," Arshavin told Sport Express.

"If Guus was to quit, our side could just simply collapse without him. I don't see any realistic replacement for him."

"However, if he feels he has the strength to help Chelsea, then that's how it should be."
