Wow... Bro !! You're Back !!
So how so how....... a worth while place to go or not...... i need your review about the place. So..... is Malapascua - or :thumbsd:
btw..... saw any Thresher Shark ??
Do tell do tell.....
We hit a bad patch of weather at the start of the the trip. Chilly 24-26 degree waters meant that brain cannot think properly for composition of photos despite an abundance of subjects. Did many long dives in spite of the temp but end up with lots of sucky photos instead.
Threshers were spotted at monad shoal, shy creatures hovered at the drop off slightly away from the cleaning stations about 10-15m away from the divers. Glances were fleeting and too far for a decent shot. That's in spite of my group all being on nitrox to lengthen bottom time. (highly recommended as the cleaning station is at 18-20m) There was a huge ass manta and 2 more smaller ones in the area as well.
Macro life was good as usual. Exotic house reef had 3 frogfish, a pair of ornate ghost pipefish, snake eels, schooling cardinalfish and batfish, huge lionfishes. Lighthouse had over-sized mandarinfish who aren't shy of divers, blue-ring octopus, cuttlefish, seahorses. Gato Island has very nice soft coral gardens, xeno crabs, spider crabs. Slight disappointment that the area doesn't seem to have any more pygmies at the moment. Ubang bato is a new site we tried, undersea mount with lots of soft corals and feather stars and crawling with nudis. strong currents that day meant that can see the nudis but hard to take a decent pic, haha.
There's another new site called quilliano which we didn't managed to go to. Maybe next time.
Point to note: Seems that there's still dynamite fishing in the area. We heard 2 blasts underwater while diving at north point. This would account for divers stating there aren't many schooling fishes in malapascua.
Guess it's up to individual to decide if it's a place worth visiting. Some other points to note: water supply on the island is not fresh water (ie slightly salty) so expect some stickiness even after you bathe. Most of the accomadation on the island don't have hot water showers. Air-con rooms are limited so gotta book early.
For me, it was an ok place to visit if you only have a limited time to visit and dive. Flying by cebu pacific meant you fly at midnight and touch down and reach resort in the morning, allowing you to dive on the first day of the trip. This maximises the time you have for diving though not all people can tahan this kind of diving. Divers with more time for a trip might want to consider a multiple destination trip to philippines (ie southern leyte, moalboal ) instead of just one place like malapascua. That's what most of the ang mohs diving in malapascua were doing, multiple dive destinations around the area.
